ᐅ Why do BILLY cabinet doors sometimes close by themselves?

Hello everyone,

I’ve recently noticed that the doors of my BILLY shelf from Ikea sometimes close by themselves, even when I don’t touch them or they are not fully open. This seems to happen without any obvious reason – sometimes the doors don’t stick, they are properly installed, and yet they still close on their own.

I’m mainly interested in understanding why the BILLY doors sometimes close by themselves. Are there technical or physical explanations for this, for example related to the hinges, door mechanism, or environmental factors like drafts or wood expansion?

Has anyone experienced something similar or knows the exact causes? I’d like to understand if this is a common issue and how it might be sustainably resolved. Thanks for your advice!

This behavior is usually caused by a combination of factors. The BILLY shelving unit uses simple metal hinges without built-in dampers or automatic door-closing mechanisms. Therefore, the doors are mechanically free to move and can be affected by very slight forces.

A very common cause is a light draft in the room that slowly pulls the doors closed. This draft effect is created by differences in air pressure or temperature, for example, when a window is open, or when air conditioning or heating is running.

Additionally, wood expansion due to changing humidity can play a role. Wood absorbs moisture depending on humidity levels, which can cause slight warping that influences how the door sits.

Another technical cause may be slightly misaligned or not fully tightened hinges, which do not properly support the weight of the door.

In short: this effect is due to physical influences such as air pressure and material properties, as well as mechanical factors related to the hinges.

I can fully relate to that. I had the same problem with a BILLY shelf and was quite annoyed because I didn’t understand why the doors kept closing by themselves.

What helped me was deliberately paying attention to sources of drafts, such as windows or even room doors opening and closing. Sometimes you don’t even realize that such air movement in the room is enough. This made me realize that the door is simply hanging “too loosely,” meaning it has almost no resistance, and a very light breeze is enough to close it.

So it’s not just a technical issue with the furniture; the environment also plays a big role. For anyone struggling with this: it’s completely normal and doesn’t mean your BILLY is defective. 🙂

In addition to the factors already mentioned, here is a detailed overview of possible causes:

1. Installation and adjustment of the doors:
BILLY doors usually have simple metal hinges without dampers or automatic closing mechanisms. If the hinges are not perfectly aligned or become slightly loose over time, the door’s opening angle changes. This can cause the door’s own weight to tip it forward and close by itself.

2. Wood expansion and environmental influences:
The MDF or particleboard fronts of the BILLY doors react to changes in humidity and temperature. Over time, minor swelling can cause slight warping of the door or minimal distortion of the cabinet body. This can affect the door’s swinging behavior.

3. Air pressure and drafts:
As mentioned, air movements play an important role. Rooms with heating, ventilation, or frequent air circulation create varying airflows that can move a door even through very small gaps.

4. Upper door versus lower door in double doors:
With BILLY double doors, it is often observed that only one door closes on its own. The weight distribution, hinge positions, and possible slight height differences between the doors can cause this uneven movement.

5. Additional tips:
- Minor hinge adjustments can often work wonders.
- Adding a rubber seal or soft adhesive tape to the door edges changes the friction.
- There are special door magnets or closers available as accessories that can specifically solve the issue.

I’m curious: How exactly did you install your doors? Are they single or double doors, and have you already tried adjusting the hinges?

I agree and would like to add that it is especially important to pay attention to uneven surfaces. The BILLY shelf should stand horizontally and stably because a tilt can affect the door closing mechanism.

In my opinion, these are the best solution if you want to permanently prevent the doors from slamming shut without rebuilding the furniture. These magnetic or spring mechanisms are easy to install and clearly improve everyday use.

If your doors slam shut because the hinges are worn out or no longer close tightly, I would recommend replacing the hinges rather than trying to fix this with temporary tricks.
