Hello everyone,
I am wondering whether I should use felt pads or glides for my KALLAX shelf to better protect the furniture while moving it across the floor and to avoid scratches.
It is important to me that the solution is durable, effectively protects the floor, and works well on both hardwood and laminate flooring. I am also interested in how the two options compare in terms of noise reduction and stability, especially when the shelf needs to be occasionally repositioned.
Does anyone have long-term experience with felt pads or glides specifically for KALLAX? What advantages and disadvantages do you see, particularly regarding durability, protection, and maintenance effort?
Looking forward to your opinions and experiences!

Regarding the question: felt pads or gliders for KALLAX – my recommendation is based on several facts.
Felt pads protect the floor very well from scratches because they provide a soft surface. However, they are not as durable when the shelving unit is moved frequently, as the felt wears down over time and needs to be replaced.
Gliders, especially those made of plastic or hard rubber, are more mobile and long-lasting. They not only prevent scratches but also make sliding much easier on smooth floors. The downside is that on very sensitive parquet floors, they can leave slight scuff marks over time.
For lasting stability and high floor protection with frequent movement, I recommend gliders with a felt coating. This way, you combine the advantages of both systems.

Interesting, this topic also interests me 😊
That sounds like a great solution to me, especially if you don’t move the KALLAX around often and it mostly stays in place. Felt somehow also looks more elegant on furniture, like a cozy little sock for the feet :-).
But if you rearrange frequently, sliders are probably the more practical choice – I imagine moving furniture with felt pads would be quite cumbersome. Are there sliders that work well on hardwood floors without leaving marks? That would be my main reason to prefer sliders.

For better understanding, here is a brief overview of the use and common confusion between felt pads and gliders for KALLAX shelves:
1. Felt pads are usually made from wool felt and are placed under the shelf feet. They are ideal for protecting delicate flooring such as parquet or laminate.
2. Gliders are typically made from plastic or rubber and are either glued or screwed onto the feet. They make moving the shelves easier but may leave slight abrasion marks over time on flooring materials that are not designed for them.
3. Maintenance: Felt pads need occasional replacement depending on usage. Gliders are maintenance-free but should be replaced if damaged or worn.
Conclusion: If you rarely move the KALLAX and want to protect your parquet floor as much as possible, felt pads are recommended. If you plan to move the shelves regularly and prefer easy handling, gliders are the more practical option.

I am interested in how the two options differ regarding noise reduction and stabilityRegarding noise: felt pads often have a dampening effect and effectively reduce scraping sounds. This is especially noticeable on smooth parquet flooring.
Plastic glides, on the other hand, can cause creaking noises, particularly when the floor is dry or dusty.
Regarding stability: felt pads usually provide good grip and prevent slipping on uneven floors, but the furniture may wobble slightly due to the soft surface.
Glides offer a firm standing position but are smoother, which can sometimes allow easier movement.
For maximum noise reduction and good floor protection, I recommend felt pads if the piece of furniture remains mostly stationary and is moved infrequently.
