Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy shelf unit from IKEA, and unfortunately, it constantly makes creaking noises whenever I walk past it or apply a slight load. This is really annoying because I expected the shelf to stand firmly without squeaking or creaking. My question is: Are there any proven tips or methods to effectively reduce or eliminate these creaking sounds on the BILLY shelf? I suspect it has something to do with the connection between the shelves or the back panel, but I’m not sure how to best address it. I would really appreciate it if anyone has a solution, including material recommendations or specific assembly tips. Thanks in advance!

Hello rudi64,

Squeaking noises in BILLY shelves often result from small tensions or friction between the shelves, the back panel, or the screw connections. A good first step is to gently tighten all screws again, as a loose connection can quickly cause such noises.

In addition, applying thin felt pads or self-adhesive foam strips at contact points helps. This greatly reduces friction and eliminates squeaking.

Some users also recommend slightly loosening the back panel or placing small plastic pads at the corners if the back panel is causing the creaking.

If you want to go into more detail, I can gladly suggest some products, such as felt pads from IKEA itself or commercially available foam adhesives.

Hello,

I would add that special attention should be paid to the screws and their counterparts. In the BILLY shelf, there are often pre-drilled holes where the screws do not always fit perfectly – this can lead to slight movements that cause creaking.

I therefore recommend loosening the screws if necessary and placing a bit of Teflon tape or thin felt under the screw heads to reduce movement. Readjusting after a few days of use can also help, as the wooden parts may still settle slightly.

Another tip: if the shelf is placed on a slightly uneven floor, this can also be a cause, as the load is not distributed evenly.

It is important to first check the screws. Then, attach felt pads at the contact points. After that, tighten everything again. This almost always reduces squeaking.

I can well understand how annoying a creaking noise can be, especially when you have just assembled a piece of furniture and want to enjoy it. I experienced this with my old BILLY bookshelf, which started creaking over time with daily use, even though I had assembled it carefully.

What helped me was applying felt adhesive strips to the shelves and slightly loosening the back panel with small spacers. This effectively counteracted the incredibly irritating noise.

I believe it is worth taking a careful approach and testing small adjustments to see what quiets the shelf down.

I would like to add that the material quality can sometimes play a role in older models. For BILLY shelves from earlier batches, the wooden panels are often not cut as precisely as they are today. This can cause very slight stresses and fitting inaccuracies.

In such cases, treating the contact surfaces with a light application of wood wax or a silicone oil suitable for furniture can help. This provides a bit more flexibility and reduces friction noise. But be careful: don’t use too much, as this can cause the surface to become sticky or damage the finish.
