Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my new kitchen with IKEA Metod wall cabinets and would like to know how much weight these wall cabinets can safely hold without causing stability issues or damage. I am especially interested in the load capacity per individual wall cabinet, ideally considering the installation instructions and recommendations for wall mounting. Could you tell me how many kilograms (pounds) can be safely stored in a single Metod wall cabinet without compromising safety? Are there differences depending on the cabinet size or design? I would appreciate any experience, official information, and tips on proper mounting.

That is a valid question and unfortunately often underestimated. In my experience, the maximum load capacity of IKEA Metod cabinet units depends heavily on proper installation – specifically wall mounting and the quality of the wall anchors. The instructions, if carefully followed, usually state about 10–15 kg (22–33 lbs) per wall cabinet shelf – which actually sounds surprisingly low.

I believe it is important to be cautious here and not judge load capacity solely based on the strength of the material, but also consider how the load is distributed on the wall. If you plan to store heavy items, you should check the wall condition and, if necessary, use additional brackets.

Good evening!

A kitchen adventure story from personal experience: I had a Metod wall cabinet measuring 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide and about 40 cm (15.7 inches) high, where I regularly stored my cookware. I didn’t weigh it, but it felt like there was quite a bit inside – probably around 20 kilograms (44 pounds) – and it held up without wobbling.

However, IKEA officially recommends no more than about 15 kilograms (33 pounds) per shelf – so it’s better to play it safe.

Conclusion: It’s better to store less and stay relaxed, and the kitchens will then remain a joy to use for a long time. 😉

Metod wall cabinets are usually rated to hold about 15 kg (33 lbs) per shelf. It is important to use the correct anchors and have at least two mounting points. Larger cabinets can support slightly more weight if installed properly.

Hello Gilukau,

to answer your question precisely: IKEA Metod wall cabinets are designed to support about 15 kg (33 lbs) per shelf. This is based on the strength of the shelves and especially the mounting instructions for securing them to the wall.

The key points are:
- Always use appropriate wall anchors for your wall type (concrete, drywall, etc.)
- At least two mounting points per cabinet are mandatory
- Distribute the weight evenly

Larger cabinets with multiple shelves can of course hold more total weight, but 15 kg (33 lbs) per shelf is a good guideline. The IKEA assembly instructions also provide advice on this.

If the wall is not solid, it’s worth using additional reinforcements or special anchors to ensure the load is safely supported.

I hope this helps!

In addition to the information provided so far, here is a brief overview:

1. Load capacity per shelf: approximately 15 kg (supported by material data and official specifications)
2. Total load capacity of the cabinet: depends on size, installation, and number of shelves
3. Installation:
- Metal hangers are intended
- Fixing with appropriate anchors in a load-bearing wall
- For drywall panels, always use special anchors

If high loads (e.g., heavy kitchen appliances) are planned, the cabinet can be additionally secured with brackets. This ensures extra stability.

Common mistake: hanging cabinets with only two screw holes and overloading them. This quickly leads to damage.

In summary: do not exceed the specified maximum weight per shelf, adjust fixing materials to the wall type, and follow the installation instructions carefully.
