Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some IKEA Hemnes furniture, specifically dressers and nightstands, and now face the challenge of assembling them as space-efficiently and compactly as possible. My main question is: How can I assemble IKEA Hemnes furniture to take up minimal space while maintaining stability?

I would appreciate tips on how to arrange the individual components cleverly, maybe specific screwing techniques or assembly sequences that are especially suitable for keeping the furniture compact—both during assembly and for the final placement.

Are there any tricks to consider when working in narrow spaces or ways to assemble them so that you might gain extra storage through smart arrangement afterward?

I look forward to any advice, ideally with pointers on what to pay attention to specifically with Hemnes, since the series uses solid wood and sometimes rather large components.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I would recommend first laying out all the parts neatly and carefully reading the instructions. Assemble the main frame first, then the shelves or drawers separately. This way, you can essentially assemble the furniture flat and position it more easily before securing everything permanently.

It also helps to keep screws and fittings organized so you can progress faster during assembly.

Hello tepuki,

Your question is really interesting because IKEA Hemnes furniture, due to its solid construction and solid wood materials, requires a special approach to be assembled space-efficiently.

Basically, I recommend the following procedure:

- First, prepare the assembly area thoroughly. A room with enough space to move around will make handling the bulky parts much easier.

- It is important to plan the assembly in modular steps: first build the carcass, but only attach the back panel at the very end. This way, the structure remains more flexible and easier to maneuver.

- Use the existing drill holes and dowel fittings as precisely as possible to avoid unnecessary waste or incorrect assembly.

- A good idea, especially for narrow rooms, is to temporarily remove the drawers or not install them initially. This allows you to move the furniture more compactly to its final position and then insert the drawers.

- Regarding the screws: do not tighten them fully at first; instead, tighten them by hand initially and adjust everything together at the end. This allows small adjustments and keeps the furniture structurally stable.

- If you want to optimize storage space, I would recommend modifying the drawer inserts or dividers if necessary, or using additional organizing systems that usually fit well with Hemnes.

I would be interested to know how large your room is and where exactly you plan to place the furniture. Also, which specific pieces you are planning to assemble? This could help me give you more targeted advice.

Good question! My room is a small bedroom of about 9 square meters (96.9 square feet). I want to fit a Hemnes dresser with five drawers and two bedside tables in there. I plan to place the dresser against the wall, but it still takes up quite a bit of space. The bedside tables should be relatively narrow without sacrificing functionality.

The problem is that I often have limited space during assembly to lay out the furniture parts. Handling the wide panels is also tricky for me. Are there any tips on how to minimize the space needed during assembly?

Try to assemble the larger parts vertically as much as possible, for example, building the carcasses upright to block less floor space. It’s best to install the drawers separately and set them aside. During assembly, make sure to only put together as much as you can comfortably move.

Also, check if you can attach the back panel last, so the furniture remains more flexible and easier to move.
