Hello everyone, I have a question about the best care for IKEA Hemnes furniture, especially in a household with pets. Our apartment is home to two cats, which tend to scratch the furniture and cause wear on the surface from hair and small dirt particles. Beyond regular cleaning and maintenance, I am particularly interested in methods or products that can help make the light surface of these wooden pieces more durable without damaging or altering the wood’s character. Are there any tips on how to protect the furniture from scratches or how to best treat them if signs of wear appear? Thank you very much for your experiences and recommendations!

Hello ralphla, I would like to add a technically detailed supplement to the previous answers, as I have been using Hemnes furniture myself for several years in a house with two dogs and a cat. The specific construction of this furniture, made from solid pine or veneered wood surface, involves some special considerations:

- The painted surface of Hemnes is durable but sensitive to moisture and mechanical stress. This means cleaning agents must not contain harsh solvents such as alcohol or acetone.

- To ensure longer durability, I recommend a maintenance interval of two months using a special furniture wax based on beeswax or carnauba wax. These waxes create a thin protective layer that minimizes micro-scratches without changing the wood’s appearance.

- Before applying, lightly sand the surface (fine sandpaper, grit 400 or finer) and remove any residue to improve the wax’s adhesion.

- I would only use protective films where there is very high scratch stress. These films can leave adhesive residues or marks after some time, which are difficult to remove.

By the way, I’m curious about the exact types of pets you have and their behavior toward furniture. Depending on their scratching habits, sleeping patterns, and grooming needs, the optimal care can vary significantly.

Thanks for asking, Palenar. As mentioned in the initial description, there are two cats, both tabby, not neutered, fairly active, and often play on the furniture. Unfortunately, scratches on the edges of the coffee table and sideboards are quite common. The cats love fabric baskets for their naps, which are usually placed next to the furniture. Fur tends to spread mostly during shedding season, which is definitely a challenge. There are scratching posts available, but they’re mainly used for play during the day rather than for scratching. Hope this helps.

If the cats tend to scratch edges, you can install edge-specific protective strips or corner guards as already recommended. These provide good protection against scratch marks and are easy to apply in various locations.

That certainly explains a lot. In this case, I recommend adding extra textile furniture care. Regular vacuuming or lint removal from the fabric baskets and the surrounding furniture significantly reduces deposits on wood surfaces.

- Use special lint rollers or handheld vacuum cleaners with upholstery nozzles.

- Additionally, lightly wipe the furniture surface with a damp cloth to pick up loose hairs.

- Important: The cloth should be only slightly dampened to avoid damaging the wood finish.

This combined care approach helps prevent the wood from looking dull or dirty due to pet hair and everyday wear. Especially during shedding periods, you should increase the cleaning frequency.

In summary, you should consider the following points:
- Gentle cleaning without aggressive agents
- Protection with furniture wax for lacquered surfaces
- Preventive scratch protection measures such as scratching posts or protective films
- Regular removal of pet hair
Ultimately, a combination of preventive and regular maintenance is essential.
