Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a larger storage space and am interested in the Ikea Pax wardrobes. My requirements are somewhat special: I want to use the wardrobes in a way that they remain stable under very heavy loads – specifically for storing heavy clothing, boxes, and sometimes tools, so everything is quite heavy.

My question is: Which Ikea Pax wardrobes, in terms of material, construction, and possibly reinforcements, are particularly stable and load-bearing under heavy use?

I am interested both in the models themselves and any recommendations for strengthening or modifications to increase the load capacity.

Perhaps someone has experience with especially sturdy versions or tips on how to optimize the stability of the Pax wardrobes. Thanks in advance!

Hey JUFENO,

first of all, it’s great that you’re looking into this topic in detail – you often only ask at Ikea after the wardrobe has already collapsed 😅.

So, the Pax wardrobes are generally quite sturdy, but their stability depends a lot on the frame, the back panel, and the load on the shelves.

My advice: try to get a wardrobe with a metal frame or reinforced side panels and make sure to use solid back panels – there are special reinforcements available. The regular wooden parts are often just particleboard.

And very important: if you’re stacking heavy items, use many short shelves instead of one large compartment, so the weight is better distributed.

Good luck with the stacking! 😎

To add an objective assessment:

The stability of Ikea Pax wardrobes largely depends on their construction. Models with a continuous metal frame—especially the internal frames in the deeper versions—provide better load distribution.

The typical wood-based panels (chipboard with melamine foil) achieve their load capacity mainly through the combination of side panels, shelves, and the back panel. The back panel plays a significant role in lateral stability and should therefore not be omitted or replaced.

Heavy loads always require additional reinforcements: using metal connectors, extra central supports, or additional shelves to distribute the load is recommended.

In short, deeper models with metal reinforcements, sturdy back panels, and multiple shelves greatly enhance load capacity.

To add a factual assessment:

I can only agree with that.

Additionally, it should be noted that the load capacity of shelves, according to the manufacturer, is usually around 15 kilograms (33 pounds). However, this is not always realistic when fully loaded, especially when point loads occur.

If you plan to store really heavy items, I recommend installing cross braces or reinforcement plates on the shelves.

Furthermore, the cabinet should always be secured to the wall; this is not only a safety measure but also noticeably increases stability under heavy loads.

100% agree! I also secured my Pax cabinet against tipping and even reinforced the back panel with extra nails – you can really feel how much stiffer it becomes.

A quick story: I once placed a heavy toolbox on just one shelf – the shelf bent a bit, but with the wall fixing, it was very stable.

One more tip: check the hinges and screws beforehand, as IKEA sometimes uses cheaper versions that can loosen under heavy load.

From my own experience, I can add the following regarding load capacity:

- Pax wardrobes with a depth of 58 cm (23 inches) are generally more stable than the 35 cm (14 inches) versions because the load is better distributed.
- For heavy use, I strongly recommend the model with a metal frame, especially the version designed as a wardrobe with a continuous center rail.
- For extremely heavy loads, it is worth replacing the shelves with stronger ones made of wood or metal.
- Assembly according to the instructions and particularly careful connection of the individual components is crucial for durability and stability.

There is certainly room for reinforcements that Ikea does not provide by default, but the points mentioned already offer a very solid foundation.
