Is there a clear, detailed guide for modifying IKEA Brimnes dressers?

I am planning to modify my BRIMNES dressers to make them more functional, such as by adding shelves, removing or altering drawer fronts, or possibly installing additional compartments.

Does anyone know if IKEA or third parties provide modification guides that go beyond the standard assembly instructions? It would be helpful if these guides not only showed basic assembly but also included tips for alterations, alternative assembly methods, or structural adjustments.

Are there any experiences with modifying the BRIMNES series that can be shared here? If so, what should be paid special attention to? Thanks in advance!

To my knowledge, there are no official IKEA modification guides for the BRIMNES series beyond the standard assembly instructions. IKEA only provides the basic assembly manuals.

For custom modifications, I recommend carefully analyzing the existing construction:
- The material is mainly particleboard with a thin melamine coating.
- Screws and fasteners are standardized and can be reused carefully.

For modifications such as adding extra shelves or removing drawer fronts, precise measurements are essential, and you may need to use additional corner brackets or wooden dowels.

I suggest creating a sketch or plan before making any changes to avoid unintentionally compromising the dresser’s structural stability.

Based on user experiences, many people like to modify their BRIMNES dressers, but these are usually individual, custom solutions—therefore, there is no universal “official guide.”

No, there is no official remodeling guide.

If you want to remove drawers, you need to detach the fronts and remove the slide rails. For more storage space, you can cut and install additional wooden shelves.

Simple, but not a guide.

I had also considered remodeling a BRIMNES dresser, so here is a brief step-by-step recommendation on how to proceed—even though there is no official instruction:

1. Analyze the existing construction: remove screws to disassemble the main frame.
2. Check the load-bearing parts—side panels and back panel usually carry the structure and should remain intact.
3. If you want to remove doors or drawers, be sure to carefully dismantle the guide rails without damaging them, so reassembly remains possible.
4. To insert internal partitions, it is advisable to use wooden dowels or angle brackets, because original screw holes often don’t fit strategically.
5. If you plan to add shelves, consider the thickness and load capacity of the material: 16mm (0.6 inch) chipboard should not be overloaded.

Common mistakes during remodeling are:
- Neglecting stability, which leads to wobbling.
- Damaging fittings during removal.

If you have more specific questions, I’m happy to assist with the individual steps.

The desire to modify a BRIMNES chest of drawers is understandable, as the system is quite modular. Here are some basic tips that might be helpful:

- Most connections use Minifix or cam lock fittings. It is important to minimize damage to these if you might want to disassemble the furniture later.
- When removing drawer fronts, it is advisable to first carefully detach them by inspecting the drawer runners, as these are sometimes secured with small clips.
- You can add extra shelves by either drilling new holes or using shelf supports/intermediate shelf brackets – the latter option is reversible.
- Be careful not to drill into load-bearing panels or insert screws that could affect the stability.

Unfortunately, there is no official modification guide, but with some basic DIY skills and caution, it is quite feasible.

This is an important step that many overlook. You should really start by taking the furniture apart into its individual components to understand the construction.

Correct, the technique at IKEA is often that drawer fronts are mounted separately to allow easy replacement – this offers a lot of flexibility for modification ideas.

Additionally, I want to point out that the material of the BRIMNES dressers – a composite of particleboard and veneered surface – is not very forgiving. Over-tightening screws or drilling without pilot holes can quickly cause damage.

Screw systems with metal brackets and, if needed, clamp holders for shelves are also recommended to avoid any damage.
