Hello everyone,

I have noticed damage on the surface of my IKEA Malm nightstand. It is an area where the melamine-coated surface has peeled off—probably due to moisture or a minor impact. I am wondering if this kind of damage can be effectively repaired, and if so, which materials or methods I should use to ensure the repair is durable and looks reasonably good over time.

Does anyone have detailed knowledge about the surface of Malm furniture from IKEA? It would be helpful if you have experience with DIY repairs, suitable products such as repair pens, fillers, or specialized adhesives. It is important to me that the solution is not only visually acceptable but also sturdy enough for everyday use.

Are there any tips on how to minimize the visible damage to the surface texture without having to repaint everything?

Thanks for your advice and suggestions!

I would recommend thoroughly cleaning and degreasing the damaged area first. After that, you can use a repair filler from a hardware store that is specifically designed for furniture surfaces.

Let it dry completely, then gently sand it down and touch it up with a suitable paint marker. This usually results in a durable repair.

Hello,

here is a brief repair guide for melamine-coated surfaces like those on the IKEA Malm nightstand:

1.) Remove any dirt and loose parts from the damaged area, wipe it with a damp cloth, and let it dry.
2.) Use a suitable fine filler or repair wax stick to fix small chips or scratches.
3.) After drying, smooth the surface with very fine sandpaper (grit 800-1000).
4.) Apply color-matched touch-up pens or special furniture markers to paint over the spot.

Important: Avoid excessive sanding, as this can further damage the melamine coating.

If the damage is larger, replacing the damaged panel might be more practical, as repairs often remain visible.

Additionally, applying acrylic sealant to damp areas can help if moisture caused the problem.

Good luck!

whether such damage can be meaningfully repaired at all and, if so, which materials or methods I should use

Repairing melamine-coated surfaces is technically possible but practically limited. Melamine is extremely hard and brittle, making it difficult to replicate the structural surface accurately.

For a durable repair, a combination of thorough cleaning, the use of a suitable repair wax or filler, and then repainting with a special touch-up pen works best. This solution is mostly functional, but visually only partially invisible.

True, too much sanding usually makes the situation worse.

If the bedside table is heavily used, for example as a resting place for damp items, I would recommend replacing the part or, for minor damage, covering it with a decorative protective layer. Repair kits specifically for furniture surfaces can be found at specialty stores or online.

If you need more information on products, I can provide recommendations from well-known furniture restoration sources.
