Anrido8Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to equip my small apartment kitchen with IKEA Metod cabinets. However, the space is quite limited, and I am considering using sliding doors instead of traditional front doors to save space and avoid narrow spots. My question for you is: What options and installation methods are available to install IKEA Metod sliding doors in a way that is space-saving and optimal for small rooms?
I am especially interested in tips on selecting the sliding door components, mounting them without requiring much wall clearance or building out walls, as well as possible alternatives that are still compatible with the Metod system.
I look forward to your experiences, particularly regarding challenges that arise in tight spaces and the best ways to overcome them.

There are several important points to consider when installing IKEA Metod sliding doors in small rooms:
- The sliding tracks should be mounted as close as possible to the cabinet to minimize the space required. Wall mounting often appears bulkier.
- IKEA’s sliding door system (e.g., Pax sliding doors) is not specifically optimized for Metod cabinets. Custom adjustments or using third-party components can often help.
- A major issue in small rooms is the depth of the sliding systems. Doors often protrude somewhat when opened—doors with slimmer profiles are preferable in this case.
- Alternatively, more open systems with thinner glass sliding doors can be considered to maintain a sense of space.
Accurate measurement of the room geometry is essential to allow for installation tolerances and door movement range. If possible, creating a recess to accommodate the sliding doors is often advisable.

The sliding rails should be mounted as close to the cabinet as possible to minimize space requirements. This is the most important tip. Ideally, the sliding rails are attached inside the cabinet body. This way, space is used on the left and right sides without protruding into the room.

Using sliding doors instead of traditional front doors to save space and avoid narrow areas.Sliding doors are exactly designed for this purpose. However, pay attention to the sliding rail height, as some Metod variants are not compatible. Otherwise, you can use standard sliding door fittings from third-party manufacturers, which offer more flexibility.

My tip: Use lightweight doors, for example, MDF with paint, as they take up less space and close more smoothly. And definitely check beforehand if the sliding doors can actually open fully in the room!
I would also recommend a double-track sliding system; it helps keep the cabinet more organized and the doors more stable. I installed this myself and can only say: it’s totally worth it. So keep at it—there’s always a solution!
