Hello everyone,
I own a KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA and I’m wondering if there are sturdy feet available that can be optionally attached to increase stability and maybe give the shelf a more modern look.
It’s important to me that these feet not only look good but are also load-bearing, as the shelf is sometimes filled with heavier items.
Does anyone have experience with this or know of products that work well? I would also like to know if the original fasteners can be used or if special adapters are needed.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello TANTAN,
your question about stable legs for the KALLAX shelving unit is very valid, especially when storing heavy loads, as investing in a solid support system is worthwhile.
In principle: IKEA usually does not offer official legs as accessories for KALLAX, since these are often modular shelves intended to be attached to the wall. However, there are third-party products or DIY solutions that can be used.
From a technical perspective, when choosing legs, you should make sure that:
1. The legs can be securely and load-bearing connected to the bottom panel of the shelf – sturdy metal brackets or special mounting kits that are screwed onto the lower panels work best here.
2. The legs have sufficient height so that the shelf does not sit too close to the floor, which helps to prevent moisture damage and also makes cleaning easier.
3. Material quality: steel or aluminum is recommended, as plastic, although cheaper, is often prone to deformation under heavy loads.
Have you checked whether your shelf panel has individual screws for mounting or is only glued? This significantly affects the possibility of attaching legs with screws.
If you like, you can provide more details here about how you use the shelf, and I can give you advice on specific products or mounting methods.

To add to Dilen’s information:
IKEA itself generally does not recommend separate feet for KALLAX shelves; instead, wall mounting is suggested for stability. While there are foot inserts available, like furniture glides or feet, these are usually designed only for lighter loads.
If you need sturdy feet, you should consider metal furniture legs with threaded screws that can be screwed into the shelf frame. This often requires modifying the bottom shelf, such as installing a threaded insert.
For home use and typical loads of about 40-50 kg (90-110 lbs) per KALLAX compartment, height-adjustable steel furniture legs are recommended to safely transfer the load to the floor.
Detailed installation instructions can often be found on accessory retailers’ websites or in DIY forums, especially if you want to avoid damaging the shelf material.
In short: sturdy feet are available but usually not sold as IKEA accessories and require visible modification to the shelf.

Maybe it helps if you first clarify exactly how the shelf is placed and used. For example, my shelf stands on a rather uneven floor, and I initially wanted to just replace the feet to adjust the height a bit.
I then installed height-adjustable furniture feet that I bought beforehand at a hardware store. The installation is relatively simple: you screw the feet onto small wooden plates, which you then glue or screw onto the base board underneath. However, you need to be careful that the lower shelves are not overloaded or warped.
The most important thing is that the load distribution is correct and the feet can support the total weight evenly; otherwise, dangerous wobbling can occur.
If you like, I can later tell you exactly which models I used—just get in touch.
Hello!
If you want to add a bit of style to your KALLAX and also ensure stability, I recommend metal legs that can be installed with some basic DIY skills 😉
Sometimes the official options from IKEA are limited, but there are plenty of possibilities for tinkerers.
I fitted my KALLAX with sleek black steel legs, which not only looked stylish but also raised the entire shelf by several centimeters. This was really practical for vacuuming underneath, and it gives the shelf a slightly floating appearance instead of just sitting flat on the floor.
A quick tip: Make sure the legs already have the appropriate mounting holes, otherwise you’ll need to drill them yourself. And please don’t rush like I did when drilling—I misjudged the depth by a few millimeters, haha 🙂
If you like, I can send you the exact model name.

Hello everyone,
here is a brief tutorial for anyone who wants to attach sturdy legs to a KALLAX unit:
1. Material selection: Choose legs made of metal or solid wood with at least 8 mm (5/16 inch) diameter for the mounting screws.
2. Preparation: Check if there is enough space under the shelf panel for installation. If there are no pre-drilled holes, you can carefully drill pilot holes yourself.
3. Installation: Securely attach the legs with suitable screws (check length and diameter). Use a spirit level to ensure all legs are the same height.
4. Load test: After installation, gradually apply weight to the unit and check for stability.
Common mistakes:
- Choosing legs that are too small (risk of tipping)
- Screws that are too short (legs not firmly attached)
- Missing additional wall anchoring (always recommended for heavy shelves!)
I hope this helps.
