ᐅ How do I fix crooked or misaligned doors on a Billy shelving unit?

KinjeHello everyone,
I have a problem with my Ikea Billy bookshelf and hope to get some advice here. Specifically, the doors have gradually become misaligned and wobble, so they no longer close properly. I suspect that over time the doors have warped or the hinges have become loose. The right door hangs slightly lower and therefore does not align flush with the left one.
I have already been adjusting the screws on the hinges, but so far this has not provided a lasting improvement. Do you know the best way to restore these Billy doors so they close straight and stable again? Are there any special tips or tools that make repairs easier?
I would really appreciate any practical advice on repairs or tips for maintaining the hinges!

It’s great that you described this in such detail! 🙂
I had a similar problem with my Billy – the doors were also misaligned and barely closed properly. My advice: first check if the screws holding the hinges to the door and the unit are tightened properly. They often loosen over time, which causes exactly this kind of misalignment.
If you find any loose screws, carefully tighten them—otherwise the material in the door could get damaged.
And if you haven’t checked the furniture dowels yet—sometimes they also come loose, which affects how the doors hang.
Don’t give up; sometimes it just takes a bit of patience and trial and error! Good luck! 🙂

Hello Kinje,
I find your description quite helpful, as it allows us to narrow down the problem. With Billy shelves, crooked or misaligned doors usually have several possible causes. Here are some technical details and a step-by-step guide that might help you:
1. Check the hinges: Ikea’s standard hinges have three adjustment options – vertical, horizontal, and depth. If the door is leaning, adjusting the vertical screw can help align the door to be level with the frame edge.
2. Inspect the drill holes in both the door and the shelf panel: Over time, these holes can widen, causing looseness. Reinforcing them with small dowels might help.
3. Verify the alignment of the shelf sides and shelves themselves, as a warped shelf can make closing the door difficult.
4. If the door is slightly warped, gently dampening and carefully straightening it before adjusting the hinges could be effective.
One question for you: Do you think the door itself is actually warped, or does the issue seem more related to the screw fixtures? This would affect the next steps.
Hope this helps a bit!

Often they loosen over timeYes, I’ve experienced exactly that, and it can be really frustrating. I once tried to just ignore it, but the problem only got worse. I also checked the screws on the hinge as well as the sides of the shelf unit. In my case, they were slightly warped, which contributed to the tilting movement.
It takes patience, but it’s worth thoroughly inspecting the entire shelf.
