Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of designing an IKEA Metod kitchen that is not only functional but also ergonomic and child-friendly. Specifically, I want to arrange and equip the cabinets in a way that allows adults to work comfortably without having to bend or stretch constantly, while also enabling my children to participate safely and age-appropriately in cooking or storing items.

I am particularly interested in the following: What are the optimal heights for base cabinets? How can I choose the interior fittings (drawers, inserts, waste systems, etc.) so that they remain practical for adults and allow children to be involved attentively but safely? Are there materials or accessories that are especially recommended for a child-friendly setup?

I would be very grateful for practical experiences, planning tips, and warnings about potential pitfalls. Thanks in advance!

Good morning,

For the ergonomic design of IKEA Metod cabinets, I recommend starting with the working height. An average working height for adults is typically between 85 and 95 cm (33 to 37 inches), depending on the height of the primary user. This height helps prevent unnecessary bending or stretching.

For children, it makes sense to include certain drawers and open shelves at a lower level, around 40 to 60 cm (16 to 24 inches), so they can reach items independently without needing a step stool.

Materials with rounded edges and shatterproof surfaces increase safety. Childproof locks for upper cabinets and electrical appliances are also advisable.

A special tip: internal drawers with soft-close features are both ergonomic and child-friendly, as they reduce the risk of finger pinching.

Hello daka8,

I would like to organize my contribution as a brief guide:

- First, determine the correct working height: Measure your elbow height and add 5–10 cm (2–4 inches). This is your target height for the countertop.
- For the cabinets below, use toe-kick height panels or adjustable feet to achieve the perfect height.
- Child-friendly areas: Plan at least one drawer or base cabinet at about 50 cm (20 inches) height, so children can easily reach inside.
- Interior organization: Removable inserts in lower cabinets are ideal for children, allowing them to organize their cutlery or favorite bowls themselves.
- When installing, make sure to use sturdy handles that are easy for smaller hands to grasp.

Common mistakes include drawers that are too high for children and forgetting safety mechanisms on lower cabinet doors.

Summary: Planning with a focus on working heights, flexible interior fittings, and safety features makes IKEA Metod cabinets ergonomic and child-friendly.

Good morning,

I would like to add an important point from my experience: accessibility should always be considered in two parts. Adults should be able to reach deep cabinets without excessive physical effort, while children need lower, manageable areas that are also easy to clean.

I also recommend avoiding sharp edges in areas regularly used by children and instead using softer materials or edge protection.

Another consideration is safety regarding storage for cleaning supplies or sharp objects—these should be securely locked away and spatially separated from children’s areas.

In conclusion, a balanced ratio between ergonomic height for adults and accessible areas for children is essential, especially when organizing tall cabinets and wall-mounted cabinets.

Wow, this topic really excites me! 🙂 I completely renovated my kitchen with Metod cabinets, and my kids each have their own areas they can access anytime.

A trick that works great: we included small step stools, as well as shelves and drawers at a low height where they can store their favorite cups and plates. This gives them confidence and makes cooking together a lot of fun!

Another tip: drawers with soft-close and self-closing features are a great investment—they not only make the kitchen quieter but also help protect little fingers during play.

So, don’t get discouraged; this works wonderfully and is totally worth it when the little ones are involved! 😊

Hello everyone,

I agree with the points made so far, but I would like to add that regarding ergonomics for IKEA Metod cabinets, attention should also be given to the height of the countertops and the use of ergonomic fittings.

- Height-adjustable work surfaces or at least a well-designed work height adapted to the user’s body size are essential.
- For child safety, soft-close solutions and drawer fittings with integrated finger protection systems are absolutely helpful.
- For planning, I recommend organizing storage consistently based on usage frequency and type: daily-use and child-accessible items in lower areas, rarely used objects in upper cabinets.

Materials with durable, easy-to-clean surfaces significantly simplify maintenance—especially important in kitchens used by children.

Pull-out waste systems with integrated child locks are also practical to prevent hazards.
