Hello everyone, I’m facing the challenge of assembling a Billy shelf unit in a very narrow space with limited room. The width is only about 60 cm (24 inches), but the height is nearly 2.10 m (6 feet 11 inches) and the depth around 30 cm (12 inches). My question is: How can I set up and adapt the Billy shelf here to make the best use of the space without it feeling too cramped? Are there smart tricks for arranging the shelves differently or accessories that can help maximize storage despite the tight dimensions? I would really appreciate concrete tips and experiences!

The easiest way is to install shelves with smaller gaps to neatly store smaller items. Use height-adjustable shelves so you can adapt the shelving unit to your needs. If possible, use glass back panels, as this makes the shelving appear less bulky.

In addition to FIKALE, I recommend not only using adjustable shelves but also considering the option of cross braces and additional hanging fixtures. Billy shelves offer simple accessories such as hooks or small baskets that make better use of the interior space. Important: To avoid issues with the narrow depth, pay special attention to the installation depth of items and store only the essentials on the shelves.

I can easily understand how frustrating it is when you have limited space but want to fit everything in. In my narrow room, I also used a Billy bookshelf, later filling some individual shelves with small baskets. This creates a clear structure and neither looks too cluttered nor too empty. It was also important for me that I didn’t have to throw anything away, just rearranged the layout.

Thanks for your initial suggestions! I find the tip about baskets and small hooks especially interesting. Are there specific models or accessories designed particularly for the Billy shelf that work better in narrow spaces? Also, I’m curious about how you handle the visual effect: Should you use light colors, or are lighting concepts more effective to make the room appear larger?

Use white or light-colored shelving parts to create a more airy feel. LED strips attached underneath the shelves provide additional lighting. Wire baskets are lightweight and practical. Choose narrow versions that are not too deep.
