Hello everyone, I recently purchased some IKEA Hemnes furniture, including a bed and a wardrobe. However, I have little experience with assembling furniture and want to avoid having wobbly or unstable pieces – especially since the Hemnes range seems somewhat more challenging due to its wooden material and construction compared to simpler shelving units.

My specific question is: How can I assemble IKEA Hemnes furniture securely without much experience? I am particularly interested in tips on mechanical stability (screws, brackets, connections) as well as advice on handling common issues like misaligned parts or inaccurate holes. Are there any tools that are especially useful, and what should I pay particular attention to so the furniture stands safely and lasts a long time?

I look forward to your experiences and detailed advice!

Hello Trapu!

This topic is really interesting because HEMNES furniture, thanks to its solid wood panels, is quite sturdy but also requires some care during assembly. I have assembled several HEMNES cabinets and dressers and can provide you with a step-by-step guide to ensure stability.

- Preparation: First, sort all the parts and compare them carefully with the instructions. There are often similar components that can be easily confused.
- Tools: A cordless drill with adjustable torque is very helpful; avoid tightening too much to prevent damaging the material. A wooden mallet, a sturdy screwdriver, and possibly a square or a spirit level are ideal.
- Assembly steps: Always screw all connections in loosely at first. Then check with the spirit level to make sure everything is straight before tightening all screws evenly. This prevents the parts from bending or being under tension.
- Common weak points: The corners and angled joints are crucial. It can help to use small corner brackets (either provided by IKEA or sourced separately) to increase stability.
- Warped parts: If a part is slightly warped, avoid forcing it when tightening. Instead, try adjusting the position of the adjacent pieces or consider returning the part.

One last question for you: exactly which furniture pieces do you want to assemble? Bed, dresser, wardrobe? Depending on that, there may be more specific tips.

Thank you for the detailed answer, that already helps a lot! Specifically, it’s about the HEMNES bed frame (140x200cm (55x79 inches)) and a dresser with 6 drawers. I’m a bit concerned about the bed because it tends to wobble, especially if the screws aren’t tightened perfectly. The dresser is mainly for storage but shouldn’t be unstable either when the drawers are opened and closed frequently.

What is the best way to handle all the screws and wooden dowels? Some parts feel like the screws are only going into softwood, and I’m worried that they might not hold firmly enough.

This is an important point because the wood quality and the type of MDF or solid wood used can vary. HEMNES actually uses solid pine wood, which is sturdy but not as hard as beech or oak. That’s why it’s essential to carefully install the screws in the correct order.

My advice:
- The wooden dowels mainly serve to align and stiffen the joints; they do not bear the load on their own. Therefore, you should insert the dowels first and then install the screws without applying too much force.
- Use your hands to start screwing in the screws gently, then switch to a cordless drill with low torque to avoid overtightening.
- Make sure all joints fit correctly before tightening the screws. If the joints are misaligned, the furniture will wobble later on.
- For the bed frame: It can help to add extra metal brackets at the corners and along the center support—even if they are not included by IKEA. This significantly increases stability, especially since heavily loaded furniture like beds often puts stress on the joints.

One more tip: It’s best to work with two people—someone can hold the parts in place so nothing shifts out of alignment. This is especially important for beds.

Make sure to get a cordless drill with a torque setting. Screw in the screws gently at first, then check if everything fits before tightening them fully. Pay special attention to the center support in the bed frame; it must be positioned correctly.

I completely agree with this. A bit of technical advice about the furniture: HEMNES often uses concealed connectors (cam locks). Make sure to turn them to the correct angle, otherwise, they provide very little stability. Also, you can reinforce the back panels of the dresser with screws if they are only slotted in. This significantly increases stability.

For the bed: Be sure to check that the screws on the bed sides properly engage with the support rails and that the central support beam lies flat. Uneven support surfaces can cause wobbling.
