Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an IKEA PLATSA system and am currently taking care of the plastic components on the frame and doors. Since these parts are made of plastic, I’m wondering which cleaning and maintenance products are suitable without making the material dull or causing it to degrade.

Does anyone have tips on how to best clean and maintain the plastic surfaces to prevent both dirt buildup and microscopic scratches? Are there any products that should definitely be avoided because they can damage the plastic?

I’m also interested in experiences with long-term care, as the material can wear out quickly with frequent use.

I look forward to your practical recommendations and advice on how to treat the plastic parts of IKEA PLATSA!

For cleaning, I simply use warm water with some mild soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners, as they can quickly damage the plastic. Afterwards, it is best to dry with a soft cloth.

I’m happy to explain in more detail since you’re asking about long-term care:

1. Cleaning: Mild soapy water or a specialized plastic cleaner work well. Avoid solvents and harsh cleaners, as they can damage and fade the plastic.

2. Maintenance: After cleaning, you can gently apply a care product using a damp microfiber cloth, such as a plastic care spray (e.g., silicone spray in a low dose), to provide subtle surface protection and reduce dust attraction.

3. Avoid cleaners containing alcohol or ammonia, as these can make the plastic brittle.

4. For visible scratches, sometimes polishing with a fine plastic polish helps, but be careful and test this cautiously.

Summary: Regular mild cleaning, occasional maintenance with appropriate products, no harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

The topic is interesting, but I often see claims that plastic parts do not tolerate alcohol-based cleaners. This needs to be differentiated.

This statement is not universally true; many plastics tolerate low concentrations of alcohol quite well when used properly. It would be necessary to clarify which plastic is specifically used in PLATSA. Is it mostly ABS, polypropylene, or another material?

Assuming it is primarily polystyrene or ABS, isopropanol at low concentration can be acceptable for short-term disinfection, but long-term exposure should be avoided as it may damage the surface.

I remain somewhat skeptical, as cleaning recommendations without a specific material analysis tend to be quite general.

Thank you for the hint, theo63. I couldn’t find any information on the material composition in the Ikea documentation, but based on my own research, I suspect the main plastics are ABS or polypropylene.

This supports your view that one should be cautious with alcohol-based cleaners. I will probably avoid them and use mild soapy water instead to prevent any long-term damage.

Does anyone have experience with using plastic care products on furniture parts, especially regarding how often they should be applied so the surface doesn’t become too “sticky” or attract more dust?

For the care of the plastic parts in IKEA PLATSA, I recommend the following:

- Clean only with mild cleaning agents, preferably pH-neutral or soap-based.
- Do not use abrasive sponges or brushes, as these can scratch the surface.
- For maintenance, a special silicone-based plastic care product can be used. This forms a protective layer on the plastic, making the surface more resistant to dirt over time.
- However, the care product should not be used too frequently, ideally 1-2 times per year, to avoid buildup that can become sticky.

Depending on usage and dust exposure, dust can also be regularly removed using a dry microfiber cloth without moisture or care products.

These recommendations are based on experience with plastic maintenance on furniture parts and can be well applied to PLATSA.
