Good morning everyone,

Lately, I have often read that owners of IKEA PAX wardrobes experience difficulties protecting their furniture from damage—whether it’s scratches on the surfaces, damage to the edges, or even material deformation due to improper use. I would like to know from you: How can I protect my IKEA PAX from damage?

I am especially interested in which protective measures you apply during assembly and daily use to prevent scratches, how to protect sensitive surfaces from mechanical impacts, and if there is anything to consider in terms of maintenance to minimize long-term damage.

I have also thought about whether using films or protective pads might help and whether the choice of placement location plays a role.

I look forward to practical, tried-and-tested tips, including how to handle the sliding doors and metal frames. Thanks in advance for your support!

The best protection for your IKEA PAX wardrobe consists of several elements:

- During assembly, handle all parts carefully and work on a soft surface to avoid scratches on the finishes.
- When putting it together, I recommend tightening the included screws gently — overtightening can damage plastic components.
- To prevent everyday scratches, transparent protective films can be applied to the surfaces.
- Door handles and sliding doors can be protected with self-adhesive transparent pads in areas that tend to rub against other furniture or walls.
- The location matters: make sure the wardrobe is not placed in damp or very sunny areas to avoid warping or fading.

Care instructions: Clean lightly with a damp, soft cloth and mild detergent; do not use abrasive cleaners.

Interesting topic! At first, I was quite worried about damaging my PAX, especially during the move-in.

I can definitely recommend that. I applied a matte protective film to the fronts myself – it’s hardly noticeable and protects against most small scratches.

I also use soft felt pads under the adjustable feet to protect both the floor and the wardrobe when it needs to be moved.

Most importantly, I think taking your time during assembly and handling the components gently is key, especially the sliding doors, as they are quite delicate.

How about your space? Do you have a spot in your home where the wardrobe can be placed more safely?

Assembly: Always build on a soft surface.

Apply protective films on doors and surfaces.

Attach felt pads underneath.

Regularly clean sliding door tracks to prevent sticking and scratching.

To precisely avoid damage when assembling the PAX system, it is advisable to pay attention to some technical details. The typical weak points of these modular cabinets are surface scratches from rough handling, edge abrasions, and especially damage to the sliding doors or hinge systems.

1. Preparation before assembly:
- Careful organization of the workspace with a sufficiently thick, soft blanket or foam mat as a base.
- Check all individual parts for damage (from transport or manufacturing).

2. Assembly process:
- Do not overtighten screws. The metal threads in the wooden panels are delicate.
- Treat the sliding door profiles with the included lubricant to ensure the doors slide easily.
- Adjust the hinges precisely according to the included instructions to prevent scraping or misalignment.

3. Protective measures after installation:
- Clear lacquer or special furniture sealants that are invisible can protect surfaces against micro-scratches.
- Additional protective films or self-adhesive transparent sheets prevent scratches and marks from bags or jackets.
- Felt pads on the adjustable feet prevent damage to the floor and simultaneously protect the underside of the furniture.

My suggestion: Could you explain more precisely what kind of damage you are concerned about? Are they scratches, dents, discolorations? That could help provide more targeted advice.

Thank you, that’s a helpful point.

Primarily, I want to avoid scratches on the white melamine surfaces, especially along the edges, since these are often touched when moving around. The doors should be as scratch-resistant as possible, particularly the sliding doors, which usually have a metal edge.

I have also read that moisture can sometimes cause warping with PAX, so I want to be cautious about that as well.

The space is not ideal – the wardrobe is partially positioned against a wall where moisture from the window can occasionally enter, so I am still looking for solutions there.

Are there any recommended protective films that can be applied discreetly, and which products are suggested to protect specifically against moisture damage for PAX?
