Hello everyone,

I am looking for good ways to modify my IKEA Besta shelving unit so that it can be used as a child-friendly and safe storage solution.

My main priorities are:
- Preventing tipping by securing it firmly
- Childproof locks, since it contains small parts
- Rounded corners or protection against sharp edges
- Avoiding easily removable parts that could cause injury or choking hazards

I have considered furniture anchors, but I’m not sure if that’s enough. Do you have any experience or tips on how to make a BESTA shelving unit child-safe without complicated modifications?

I look forward to your suggestions and maybe some kind of checklist or recommendations for suitable accessories!

Hello flo51,

- Install furniture anchors, preferably attaching both to the wall and the shelf
- Use child-safe handle locks (e.g., click systems)
- Cover edges with protective corners made of silicone or plastic
- Store heavy items on the lower shelves

These are the most important safety points for BESTA.

Hi flo51,

Your idea to modify the BESTA shelving unit to be child-friendly is very practical. The importance of securing it to the wall is often underestimated. IKEA offers furniture anchors or safety kits that prevent the units from tipping over if children pull on them. Additionally, I recommend child safety locks for the doors and drawers that open either by pressing or using a small mechanism—this keeps curious children out.

It is also advisable to protect the corners with soft edge guards, which can be bought inexpensively at hardware stores. Make sure the storage units have as few loose parts as possible, and store small items in containers with secure lids.

If you like, I can provide more detailed information on suitable products or DIY solutions. Let me know what interests you most!

Hello flo51,

I would like to give you a structured guide on how to safely convert your IKEA BESTA into a childproof storage solution:

1. Furniture anchoring systems: Secure each module firmly to the wall to prevent tipping under load. Make sure to use appropriate anchors, especially on drywall.

2. Locking mechanisms: Use child safety locks specifically designed for doors and drawers. IKEA itself offers, for example, “safety latches.” Alternatively, magnetic child safety locks that are installed on the inside are recommended.

3. Edge protection: I recommend attaching soft edge protectors to all visible edges, which are easy to apply and visually unobtrusive.

4. Interior organization: Sort small items into lockable boxes so that no small parts are directly accessible.

5. Height and location: Store heavy items in the lower compartments and avoid keeping fragile or hazardous items within children’s reach.

6. Adjust shelves: If you wish, individual elements, such as drawers, can also be equipped with dampers to prevent finger pinching.

7. Regular inspection: Check all safety measures regularly for effectiveness and any wear.

This is truly the most important point. This is the only way to completely avoid accidents caused by tipping.

If you need specific product recommendations for tighter fittings or accessories, feel free to ask.

Summary: Furniture anchors + secure locks + edge protection + organized storage + regular inspection = childproof BESTA shelving.

To ensure the safety of the IKEA BESTA shelving unit as a storage solution for children, the most important factor is proper anchoring to the wall, combined with tested child safety locks for all openings.

Regarding anchoring:
- Use screws and wall plugs that are certified for the type of wall (e.g., concrete, drywall).
- Make sure the shelving unit cannot tip over, even if children pull on it or climb it.

For child safety locks on doors and drawers:
- Mechanical locks that are easy for adults to operate but difficult for children.
- Magnetic systems that are hidden, providing a clean and aesthetically pleasing look.

For edge protection, I recommend:
- Standard-compliant edge guards made of soft PVC or silicone, which can be easily attached to corners.

Additional tip:
The BESTA shelving unit should ideally not use loose shelves but rather secure them firmly so children cannot remove them.

Exactly, the most common accident is the shelving unit tipping over when children pull on it. That is why this point should never be overlooked.

Hey flo51 and all other safety enthusiasts here 😉

I think the BESTA can be made really child-friendly with just a few simple tricks, without making it look like a bunker. Here are some handy tips from me:

- For the lockable doors, simply get some nice child-safe handles that adults can easily open but kids will struggle with.
- Sharp edges? No problem—there are transparent edge protectors that barely show but are super soft.
- If you want to jazz up the unit, you can also cover the inside of the doors or the back panel with magnetic boards or chalkboard film. This way, the unit itself becomes a play area—and the little ones can play safely without pulling stuff out, which worries us.

I completely agree! Especially if the kids try to climb it now and then. This greatly reduces the chances of minor accidents.

And finally: For the brave, soft-close door dampers are really great—they prevent doors from slamming shut and protect little fingers.

Good luck with the modification, it will be child’s play!
