Hello everyone,
I have an issue with my Ikea Kallax shelf drawers that has me a bit confused. The drawers keep sliding all the way out when I pull them too far. Apparently, I either missed or left out the small plastic stoppers that secure the drawers during assembly.
My specific question is:
Is it really necessary to use these plastic stoppers, or are there simpler solutions to prevent the drawers from coming out completely?
I’m mainly looking for reliable alternatives or tips on how to solve this problem permanently without having to disassemble the entire shelf. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

That sounds frustrating that the drawer keeps falling out. I’m familiar with that issue and almost forgot the same thing myself.
For me, the stoppers are absolutely essential for the Kallax-style system. They prevent the drawers from falling out when pulled too far.
Maybe you can get the stoppers later and install them; it’s usually quite easy to do. Also, remember not to overfill the drawers, as that makes the problem worse.

For clarification: The stoppers used in Kallax have a defined position on the rails and serve as mechanical stops. This prevents the drawer from being accidentally pulled out completely, which can usually cause damage or injury.
There is no factory-approved alternative that is permanently safe without stoppers. Other solutions, such as homemade stops, are only conditionally recommended, as they can affect the drawer’s travel path and durability.

Thanks in advance for the answers.
I actually left out the stoppers because they didn’t really stand out in the box.
Is there a way to install the stoppers even months after purchase without having to dismantle the entire shelf? Do I need to completely remove the drawers for that? I have some items inside and would prefer not to empty everything.

Basically, it is possible to install the stoppers on Kallax drawers afterwards, but it requires a certain approach:
1. Pull the drawer out completely and, if possible, lift it out of the cabinet, usually by tilting it slightly.
2. If the drawer is heavily loaded, be sure to empty it beforehand to prevent accidents.
3. Stoppers are small plastic pieces that slide onto the rails and are often secured with a small screw.
4. For some models, installation may also be possible with the drawer inserted if you have enough skill and use flat tools – however, this is difficult.
A truly safe and reliable installation is only possible after fully removing the drawers. I would recommend at least emptying and removing the top drawer completely to attach the stoppers.
If you are looking for magnets or other DIY solutions for use on the go, do you mean you want to avoid stoppers entirely? I would not recommend this, as the rails will not stay secured when pulling the drawer out.
