Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a walk-in closet system for my bedroom and have often heard about the Ikea Pax system. My specific question is: Are there any proven or official Ikea Pax solutions that are particularly suitable for walk-in closet systems?

I am mainly interested in modules that can be easily combined to smartly design both storage space and access areas. Additionally, I would appreciate practical tips on how to set up the Pax system so that it has the character of a walk-in closet without the need for fully custom-made solutions.

It would be great if anyone could share their experience or knowledge—perhaps also with suggestions for the best configurations or add-ons that work well for this purpose. Thanks in advance!

Hey gosau35, good question! Ikea doesn’t have an official answer in that sense – they sell standardized modules. But the flexibility of the Pax system really makes it ideal for walk-in closet setups.

I planned my own closet space by placing two rows facing each other, basically creating a small walk-in wardrobe with a passage in the middle. The modules come in a variety of widths and heights, so they’re easy to adapt, and with a few Pax interior fittings (drawers, hanging rods), it quickly becomes quite cozy.

My tip: when planning, pay close attention to the walking paths because the doors need space to open. If the space is tight, it’s better to choose sliding doors for Pax – they’re not always cheap, but they save a lot of room. So yes, no official solutions, but if you put a bit of thought into it, you can build a solid walk-in closet system with Pax. And the fun of assembling it is part of the deal 😉

There isn’t exactly an official statement from Ikea on this – they sell standardized modules.

From my experience, I would add that the Ikea Pax system is fundamentally designed to be modular in order to allow for highly versatile wardrobe configurations – which also makes it suitable for walk-in options. It’s important to first clarify your functional requirements: more hanging space, drawers, shelves, or accessories like interior lighting and pull-out trays.

I once built a walk-in wardrobe using Pax, focusing on combining 50 cm (20 inch) and 75 cm (30 inch) wide units. This combination allows for walkways between 80 and 100 cm (31–39 inches) wide, which is quite comfortable for a walk-in area. The corner solutions Ikea now offers as accessories are also practical for optimizing space use.

Height is another important factor: Ikea provides various heights depending on ceiling height. It’s advisable to use the customization options with top units or trim pieces to neatly finish the upper part of the space and emphasize the look of a “walk-in wardrobe.”

A practical tip: the doors are standard hinged doors, but there are also roller doors and sliding doors available. The latter are often preferable in narrow passages.

If you want to know more, I’m happy to send you an overview of the key components that have proven useful for such projects.

To add: From a technical perspective, Ikea does not offer specific "walk-in closet systems," but rather standardized modules and interior fittings that can be combined flexibly. The maximum width of a Pax cabinet is 100 cm (40 inches), and the height varies, usually between 201 and 236 cm (79 and 93 inches).

When planning a walk-in closet system with Pax, the most important criteria are the room dimensions and circulation paths. The minimum width for walk-in areas is about 80 cm (32 inches), with 90+ cm (35+ inches) preferable to ensure sufficient freedom of movement. Interestingly, Pax units can be positioned facing each other to create a sort of cabin with a walkway.

The frame structure also allows for the installation of interior lighting and a variety of hanging systems. Especially for corner solutions, additional planning is recommended since Ikea does not offer specific corner modules in the Pax system; however, these can be combined with supplementary shelves or inserts.

Conclusion: Official "Pax solutions" for walk-in closets do not exist, but with modular planning and accessories, it is definitely possible to create customized walk-in closet spaces using the system.
