Hello everyone, I am facing the challenge of disassembling an Ikea Malm bed – preferably in a simple way without damaging the furniture. Specifically, I would like to know the best approach, which tools are necessary, and if there are any special tips to quickly and cleanly detach the individual parts (slatted frame, bed frame, side panels, etc.). Are there recommendations for the order of disassembly or helpful tricks, especially if you only have standard screwdrivers and basic tools at home? I want to avoid breaking anything during the process or getting stuck on any part for a long time. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Paula8, to carefully disassemble a Malm piece of furniture, it is advisable to first systematically locate all screws and connecting fittings. Ideally, use a hex key of the appropriate size, as Ikea often uses standard sizes like 4 mm (0.16 inches). It is important to work gently to avoid stripping the screws. Start with the upper structural parts such as the slatted frame or the headboard, as they are usually only slotted in or fixed with a few screws. Gradually, you can then remove the side panels. It is best to document the individual screws and components in an organized way during the process – this will save a lot of time when reassembling later. Tools: a hex key set, a screwdriver with both Phillips and flathead bits, and a small pair of pliers for clips are usually sufficient.

Paula8, first remove the mattress and slatted frame. Then, loosen all visible screws on the side panels. Watch out for wooden dowels, which are often hidden; you can carefully loosen or pull them out. It's best to keep the screws in small containers.

How exciting, Paula8! Taking apart a Malm can actually be fun when you approach it step by step. 🙂 The moment when you realize everything is coming apart more easily is really cool! My advice: play the handyman and take your time—even if you only have basic tools. And if a screw gets stuck, stay calm! It’ll work out. If you like, share your progress and tell us how it’s going—I’m cheering for you!

Hey Paula8, don’t worry – a Malm is not complicated at all! 🙂 Think about it: typical Ikea furniture is designed to be modular. Just take the mattress off, then check the connectors – usually, there are connector screws plus wooden dowels that you can easily loosen with an Allen key and a bit of patience. If you have pliers, they can help if some parts get stuck. And voilà – no drama, with a little patience you’ll have your bed taken apart in no time. And remember, a good playlist or audiobook makes the whole process easier!

Thanks in advance for the initial tips, especially the recommendation about organizing the screws was very helpful! I’m still wondering: Are there specific areas on the Malm bed that are particularly tricky to assemble? For example, I’m unclear about certain connector fittings that seem to be stuck. Do you need to be careful not to break any wood panels? Does this apply more to the bed frame itself or rather to accessories like underbed drawers? Looking forward to any further advice.
