LagasarHello everyone, I am considering disassembling some of my IKEA Billy bookcases and rearranging them in a different configuration. I am mainly interested in how easy or difficult it is to take the bookcases apart without damaging any parts. Are there any specific tips or procedures to keep in mind? And how stable do the bookcases remain after being taken apart and reassembled multiple times? I look forward to any experiences and advice on the topic "How easily can Billy bookcases be disassembled and rearranged?" Thanks in advance!
On the topic of disassembly: When taking apart Billy shelves, you should be careful not to forcibly pull out the dowels, as they can break. It’s best to completely remove the shelves first and then carefully loosen the screws on the sides. Often, it’s also useful to systematically label the individual parts in case the assembly order is important for later rearranging. Another important point: Frequent disassembly can cause the drill holes on the cabinet sides to become slightly worn, which can affect stability when reassembling. In my experience, with some care, the shelves can be rearranged at least twice without significant wear. It might be helpful to know whether you plan to disassemble the shelves while installed or after removing them.

Ideally, I would prefer to dismantle them after removal since access is easier. However, with very large units, this can be more complicated. What about sturdy shelves that have been installed for a long time? Does the material become harder to separate, or are there other difficulties?

1. First, remove all shelves to reduce weight.
2. Unscrew the screws using an appropriate Phillips screwdriver.
3. Carefully pull out the dowels, preferably without tilting them.
4. If necessary, use a thin pry tool to separate the cabinet parts without damaging the wood.
Common mistakes include pulling the connectors out too roughly, which can damage the holes. If the shelves have been used for a long time, be sure to check the holes for damage, as this can reduce stability when reassembling. In my experience, making adjustments while the unit is still assembled is rather impractical and increases the risk of scratches or chips.
