Hello everyone,
I recently bought a KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA and added casters to make it more flexible in the room. However, I noticed that the shelf tends to tip over quite easily when I nudge or pull it slightly. Especially when it’s somewhat loaded, I feel uneasy about it potentially falling over.
Has anyone else had similar experiences with the KALLAX shelf on casters?
How stable is it for you? Do you use special casters that prevent tipping, or have you installed additional stabilizers?
I’m particularly interested in whether the tipping issue is a general problem with the KALLAX on casters, or if I might have assembled something incorrectly.
Thanks in advance for your insights!

I’m familiar with that. That’s why I use casters with locking brakes. Additionally, it helps to mount the casters closer within the shelf’s footprint. This reduces the risk of tipping.

Hello plo_son,

You have a classic issue with tipping stability in modular furniture on casters. The KALLAX is originally designed to be stable without casters, and as soon as you make it mobile, the center of gravity and the base support area change dynamically.

This problem often occurs because IKEA casters without built-in locks are used and are often mounted on the outer corners, making tipping very easy when lateral force is applied.

A few tips from me:

1. Use casters with locks – this provides more stability despite mobility.
2. Move the casters inward, meaning screw them closer to the center underneath the unit, so the tipping point shifts further outward.
3. Check the bottom of the unit – if it is heavily loaded on top and light at the bottom, the tipping tendency increases. A more even weight distribution helps.
4. Optional: Install rear cross braces or add extra wall anchoring if the unit is meant to stay in one place.

Another question: How do you like the look of the casters? Many struggle with aesthetics versus functionality.

PS: What loads are you placing in your KALLAX and are the casters specifically made for furniture or are they universal casters from a hardware store?

Looking forward to your answers!

The KALLAX is actually designed for stability without casters

Well said 🙂 I can only confirm that. I tried it myself, and with just a slight push, the KALLAX started its solo dance 🙂

I then simply switched to thicker casters with brakes, and the problem became much less noticeable. It also helps not to load the shelf completely fully, especially not heavy items only on the top while leaving the bottom empty.

A little tip from me: placing a bit of carpet underneath increases the resistance when pushing, making the tipping effect less abrupt.

And don’t worry – the shelf won’t turn into an acrobat right away, but you should still be a bit careful. After all, these are lightweight MDF panels, and you don’t want anything to tip over and get damaged.

Good luck!
