ᐅ What to do if IKEA HEMNES cabinet doors don’t close properly?

Hello everyone,

I recently assembled an IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and noticed that the doors do not close properly. Specifically, the doors are sometimes slightly misaligned, one spot sticks a little, or the door swings open slightly after closing. The hinges are installed as instructed, and I have already checked that the screws are not loose, but that does not seem to be the issue.

I suspect the problem might be related to the hinge adjustment or possibly the wood or alignment of the doors. Before making random adjustments, I would like to know which steps are most effective for correctly aligning the doors. I understand that IKEA hinges are usually adjustable, but which screws affect height, depth, or lateral positioning exactly, and what sequence is recommended?

Does anyone have experience with this specific issue on the Hemnes wardrobe or useful tips to fix the problem permanently?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Is there a trick to adjust the height of HEMNES cabinet doors without affecting other settings?

The height adjustment on Hemnes is done by loosening the mounting screws of the hinge plate on the cabinet bottom or top panel. This can be a bit tricky since you need to support the door to prevent it from slipping.

One tip is to only loosen one screw at a time, adjust the door, and then tighten it immediately. Then repeat the process with the other screw.

This way, you minimize the risk of the door shifting sideways or in depth. However, it’s not possible to adjust the height completely without influencing other settings.

So it’s best to first adjust the height, then fine-tune the lateral and depth settings afterward.

If the door feels too low at the top corner, you can also try placing a felt or plastic pad under the hinge stops there. This prevents wobbling or rubbing.

Thanks, that sounds logical and easy to understand. I tried it that way last night and was able to reduce the height differences, but after the subsequent lateral adjustment, it still wasn’t 100% correct.

One question: How exactly does adjusting the depth with the rear screw work? When you turn the screw in, does the door move closer to the cabinet or away from it? The manual isn’t very clear to me on this.

I’d like to know if I should try the opposite direction if needed.

You turn the rear screw on the hinge inward to bring the door closer to the cabinet. So, if the door is sitting too close to the cabinet body, start by turning the screw outward slightly.

Thank you all for your tips.

In the end, I followed this sequence: height, then lateral position, and finally depth. With small adjustments to the screws, I was able to effectively even out the gap between the doors and the cabinet, and now the doors close flush and without spring-back.

For anyone facing the same issue, my conclusion is: patience and careful adjustment of the three screw directions make all the difference. It is also very helpful to check the unit with a spirit level before adjusting to rule out misaligned doors caused by uneven installation.

Thank you for the support!
