Hello everyone,
I have a small but important question for me: I own several Ikea Hemnes furniture pieces that I really appreciate – simple, sturdy, and timeless. However, I now want to clean these furniture items without using chemical cleaners, as I am sensitive to many cleaning products and also want to live more sustainably.
Therefore, my question to the community is: What is the best way to clean Ikea HEMNES furniture without chemicals? I am especially looking for a gentle method that does not damage the wood, leaves no residues, and still effectively removes dirt and grease.
Are there any home remedies or natural solutions you can recommend? What experiences have you had – especially with the sometimes lacquered or oiled surfaces of the HEMNES series?
I look forward to diverse and practical tips, including advice on maintenance after cleaning.
Thank you in advance!

If dust settles on the Hemnes shelves for a while: use a dry microfiber cloth, not too damp, otherwise the wood might get a cold shock.
For stubborn spots (coffee rings, fingerprints), I occasionally try a light mixture of water and olive oil – let it sit carefully for a moment and then wipe off with a dry cloth.
Not too much and not too often! Natural beauty needs care, not to be drowned.

Wow, there are really great tips here! I also love my HEMNES furniture and have been using a mixture of water and castile soap to clean it for years. No chemicals, very gentle, and the furniture feels great afterward.
In addition, I try to polish it a little with beeswax after cleaning – this protects the surface and gives it a nice silky shine.
Give it a try, it’s really enjoyable to see how the furniture responds to natural care! 😊

I really love my HEMNES furniture too and have been using a mixture of water and Castile soap to clean it for years. That’s a very good tip. Castile soap is indeed one of the mildest natural soaps available and works great on wood surfaces. It cleans effectively without drying out the wood.
One more note on application: After cleaning, you can wipe the furniture with a dry cloth to remove any residues. This helps keep the wood breathable and protected.
As for how often to clean, depending on usage, cleaning every few weeks is usually sufficient; in between, you can simply wipe it dry.
I think it’s great that everyone here also pays attention to sustainability and well-being!

I want to avoid any residues that stick or develop strong odors later.I’d like to address this: With oiled furniture, it is very important to ensure that no oil residues remain on the surface. These can stick and cause unpleasant odors. After oiling, it’s best to allow several hours of thorough ventilation.
It is important to apply a thin layer and then rub it in well. With painted or lacquered furniture, these issues are less relevant because the finish provides protection.
A good technique for oiled wood is to use a fine abrasive sponge if you want to remove stains mechanically – but this requires some practice.
If there is interest, I can also write something about “wood protection and oils.”

I always find it motivating to be able to keep the HEMNES furniture in great condition with so little effort. And doing it all without chemicals just feels much better!
When cleaning the HEMNES furniture, it is important to avoid abrasive materials because of the lacquer finish. A microfiber cloth that is not too wet usually works wonders.
For more stubborn stains, I would recommend using a mild soapy solution, as mentioned before. Vinegar should be used very carefully and only in a highly diluted form, since some lacquers can react sensitively.
For oiled surfaces, applying linseed oil can effectively repair minor scratches and keeps the wood supple.
