I can’t say anything about that. First, we need to wait and see what stops working as usual.

You don’t pay anything here, and you’re free to leave if you don’t like the program. Since you’re not paying, the operator doesn’t owe you any functionality.

It’s actually the other way around: @In der Ruine invests unpaid free time to keep the forum worthwhile to visit – for that, the operator “owes” him appreciation. If that appreciation is missing, the unacknowledged “contributor” will reflect that absence. The operator here doesn’t exactly shine – unlike in many other forums where it’s common – by producing his own content. Others may praise me personally, but for example @ypg provides a significant amount of value, and the operator would do well to treat key account users accordingly. If I were in his position, I would have long since given her a “Pro” account for her planning software so she wouldn’t have to delete her projects so quickly just to share new ones. Building up a steady flow of visitors for a forum is not automatic and requires ongoing care. Job satisfaction is not limited to paid employees.

And what is unfortunately still urgently missing, and has actually been pointed out since January 14th, is the fact that in the "New Posts" overview, it is possible to identify the threads in which one has posted. Example from another forum:

That may be true, but the personal standard should be that something new is at least as good as the predecessor. We are still miles away from that.
Sure, you can live with many shortcomings, but should you just accept them?
Simply walking away is not my style. Probably not for those who share their opinions here either.

What does the mandatory part have to do with the optional part?

Interesting way you put it.

He doesn’t owe you or us anything, and I believe the admin has made that clear many times before. And yes, you’re here voluntarily, even though it’s been about 15 years now, right? But sure, he benefits from your contributions, and you benefit too—you can showcase yourself and share your opinion.

But I’d better go trim my thuja hedge before it grows through the welded wire fence.

Giving an opinion

Is that just your level?

Double wire fence panels

.. I can adapt to that, similar to a standard chain-link fence..

Trying to build a reputation anonymously in a forum… in real life that actually works a bit better.

Are you referring to the underdeveloped sense of duty towards the appreciation of what I’d call the “volunteers”? – yes, that couldn’t be more obvious :-(

We’re here despite, not because of what I’d say is his somewhat difficult personality; the “because” applies to the questioners. You can only help those who come to you, and that’s primarily in specialist forums, not at a highway interchange. Among the range of specialist forums, it’s not the friendliest but the most visited that gets the most effort. Which really shouldn’t be a reason to neglect politeness on the moderators’ side as the busiest forum. Unfortunately, in this respect only @KlaRa acts as a good example here. Elsewhere – as I have said – moderators and admins often provide useful content themselves.

No, this is clearly one-sided here. And do you really think that an employee in the public sector gets a boost in their career or when running for the staff council by helping construction consultants in their free time? – just as little as if they were with the Salvation Army, fire brigade, mountain rescue, THW, or NABU. Here at least, you get less abuse and obstruction than in emergency services.

A friend of mine is on the local council and currently campaigning as mayor. People communicate with him because of the effort he puts in. Here, up to the forum relaunch, there were about 200 posts; currently, they simply can’t.
