Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of disassembling my Ikea Pax wardrobe as carefully and efficiently as possible for an upcoming move.
Since the wardrobe consists of several modules with sliding doors and interior fittings, I want to know the best way to take it apart to avoid damage during transport and to make reassembly easier.
Are there any special tools or techniques that have proven especially useful? How should I handle the sliding doors? And is it recommended to systematically label or organize screws and other small parts?
I look forward to your experiences and helpful tips!

Hello jopau,
I understand well that the disassembly process can be stressful, especially when you’re worried about damaging parts or losing small pieces.
Sometimes it helps to think of the entire process as a kind of puzzle and plan accordingly.
Here’s a tip: Lay down a protective surface like a blanket on the floor where you can neatly arrange the parts – this protects them from scratches.
Also, when I’ve moved, I’ve always kept a small notebook to quickly note which parts belong where. This way, you don’t lose track later on.
If you feel uncertain, don’t hesitate to ask specifically for detailed diagrams.

Place a protective layer such as a blanket on the floor where you can lay out the parts cleanly – this prevents scratches. This is a very important tip that is often underestimated.
Additionally, I recommend discreetly marking the individual components when disassembling them with a permanent marker or small labels. This makes it easier to keep track of their orientation during reassembly.
One more thing about tools: pay special attention to using the correct screwdriver – using tips that are too small or too large can damage screws, causing unnecessary complications.
I have had similar experiences and can confirm that the sliding doors and their tracks are the most delicate parts when disassembling Pax.
A tip: Lift the doors carefully and pull them out at the correct angle to avoid the rollers getting jammed.
The screws for the tracks can also be quite tight; if necessary, use a suitable screwdriver with a good grip to prevent damage.
For organizing the screws: I use small resealable bags with labels that I stick directly onto the furniture. This saves a lot of stress during reassembly.

Still, disassembling is usually better because Ikea-Pax furniture is fastened with dowels and screws that can be damaged during transport when the frame is fully assembled.I fully agree with this.
A fully assembled frame can soften or warp due to transport shocks. The connectors are not designed to withstand prolonged stresses in such situations.
Therefore, disassembling into individual cabinet parts is advisable not only for weight reasons but also to maintain the wardrobe’s long-term stability.
It is recommended to mark the screws with colored markers during assembly to make later adjustments easier.

I use small, resealable bags with labels that I then stick directly onto the furniture.I actually preferred the jam jar system – you can keep everything neatly organized, nothing gets lost, and these jars aren’t single-use products. Sustainability meets order – that makes it twice as enjoyable! 😄
And honestly: take your time when removing the sliding doors, otherwise you might end up with the well-known “door collapse” in no time.
Good luck, and feel free to share how it went!
