ᐅ How can the IKEA Hemnes be combined with upcycled materials as a DIY project?

Hello everyone, I am planning a DIY project to customize an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture (for example, a dresser or nightstand) not only individually but also by combining it with upcycled materials. My goal is to blend this rather classic design with sustainable elements and recycled or reused materials in a way that keeps it functional, enhances its appearance, and at the same time makes it significantly more sustainable. What materials and techniques are particularly suitable for skillfully integrating wood, metal, fabric, or other materials? Are there any ideas for surface treatment or remodeling that can give the Hemnes furniture a completely new look without compromising stability or functionality? I look forward to suggestions and practical tips!

Thank you for the helpful tips so far. I have a specific question about combining metal upcycling with the wood of Hemnes furniture: How can I treat rusty metal parts that I want to recycle so that they retain their vintage charm but do not cause further damage from rust on the furniture? Especially for drawer fronts or handles – should I apply a sealant as well? If so, which products are recommended that also look good visually?

For treating rust on visible metal parts, I recommend the following procedure:

- Remove rust mechanically using a wire brush or steel wool, taking care not to completely destroy the patina
- Then apply a rust-inhibiting primer specifically designed for visible rusty surfaces (e.g., clear or rust-colored products)
- For visual adjustment, a matte or satin clear coat finish works well, preserving the rusty look while protecting against further corrosion

Make sure to use products without aggressive chemicals to avoid damaging the wood. Alternatively, wax (such as beeswax) can be used as a sealant, which often results in a more natural appearance.

For this purpose, so-called “rust stabilizers” are suitable. These chemical agents preserve the rust without removing it, so the patina is maintained and further rust formation is prevented. When applying, the metal must be clean and free of loose rust dust. Afterwards, a clear lacquer can be applied to protect the surface permanently. Important: Always test products on an inconspicuous area first to ensure the vintage look is preserved.

That’s a good tip. Additionally, I would recommend allowing the metal parts to air dry for a while after mechanical cleaning before applying a rust stabilizer or corrosion protection. This ensures that no moisture is trapped, which could later cause problems under the sealant.

Another way to combine upcycled metal and wood materials with the Hemnes furniture piece is by incorporating old wooden pallets or wood scraps as an extension of the body or as a background. These can be sanded first with 120-180 grit sandpaper and then oiled to preserve their natural charm.

If metal parts are to be used as decorative elements, cut them to size, pre-drill the mounting holes, and use washers to distribute pressure on the wood and prevent tear-out. For fastening, M5-6 screws made of stainless steel or galvanized steel are recommended.

Finally, apply a UV and moisture protection layer to ensure durability in rooms with fluctuating humidity. This way, the stability of the Hemnes furniture is maintained.
