Hello everyone,
I recently bought an IKEA Platsa furniture unit for my living room and am now wondering how to best maintain the surfaces to keep them looking good for as long as possible.
At the moment, I am unsure which cleaning products are most suitable for treating the high-quality laminates or paints. Are there any specific tips to avoid scratches or discoloration?
Are there perhaps differences in care depending on the surface material within the Platsa series?
I would really appreciate concrete recommendations, preferably including suggestions for products that can be used daily without damaging the surfaces.

Are there any special tips to avoid scratches or discoloration?Hey, great question! 😄 For Platsa surfaces, gently wiping with a microfiber cloth usually works best – it hardly leaves any scratches.
- Avoid harsh cleaning products, as they often contain substances that make the laminate dull or cloudy.
- Mild dish soap in warm water is your friend.
- Dry carefully to prevent water spots.
If you have stubborn dirt, you can try diluted vinegar or citric acid, but use sparingly!
Scratches often happen from rough sponges or using dirty cloths, so always keep things clean.
So, a little gentle care, and your Platsa furniture will thank you with a nice appearance for longer! 😉
Hello na_ku,
I’d like to add a few points since your topic is quite valid, and IKEA plastic films or melamine surfaces can sometimes be a bit delicate.
First, it is very important not to treat the surface with abrasive cleaners or chemicals containing solvents. Such products can quickly degrade the material.
- Clean your Platsa furniture with warm water and a pH-neutral, mild detergent.
- Avoid abrasive sponges or stiff brushes, as they can scratch the surface.
- Direct sunlight on the films can cause color fading over time – this should be avoided.
If you have a stain that you can’t remove, always test a cleaning product first on a hidden spot. Do not use harsh solvents or alcohol!
Sometimes IKEA also provides specific care instructions on their product pages. If in doubt, customer service can also help.
If you like, I can give you some specific product recommendations that have proven effective for these types of surfaces.

For Platsa surfaces, gently wiping with a microfiber cloth usually works best – this helps to avoid scratches. That is correct. For cleaning IKEA Platsa surfaces, I also recommend the following structured approach:
- Use only a damp microfiber cloth without any abrasive additives.
- Use a mild, pH-neutral cleaning concentrate that does not contain solvents, ammonia, or alcohol.
- After cleaning, wipe the surface with a dry, soft cloth to avoid moisture residue.
- For tougher stains, avoid chemical cleaners and instead try soaking with a damp cloth.
To prevent scratches, be careful with objects that have sharp edges on the surface. Kitchen or worktops may require additional protection, such as cutting boards or similar.
Regarding color changes, the foils used are generally lightfast, but surfaces exposed to UV light over a long time can fade slightly. Avoiding direct sunlight is advisable if long-term color retention is desired.

Clean your Platsa furniture with warm water and a pH-neutral, mild detergent.I would like to add that for maintaining Platsa surfaces, simple household remedies that do not contain strong acids or alkalis are sufficient.
- Avoid abrasive sponges and stiff brushes.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints and light dirt.
- Always dry the surface thoroughly after cleaning to prevent water stains.
If all these points are followed, the surface will remain attractive and durable for a long time.
I also recommend avoiding waxes or polishes, as they can damage the laminate.
