lereleoI would like to start a discussion about which replacement parts for the Ikea Hemnes furniture series are the hardest to obtain.
I recently tried to purchase individual fittings and drawer components for a Hemnes dresser and quickly realized that not everything is easily available. Therefore, I am interested in learning from your experience which replacement parts are the least available or have long delivery times.
Is it more often screws, special hinges, drawer runners, or perhaps completely different components? Where are the usual bottlenecks when it comes to spare parts supply?
I think the focus should please be on Hemnes furniture, with as much concrete information as possible about the typical problem parts, delivery times, and possibly availability through customer service. Thank you in advance for your insights!

which spare parts for the Ikea Hemnes furniture series are the hardest to obtain. This is a very important question – I have personally experienced how frustrating it is when you need only a small part that seems impossible to find anywhere.
In my experience, the drawer runners are usually the most difficult. Unfortunately, these are often standard parts at IKEA, but specifically for Hemnes, they don’t seem to be regularly available anymore when it comes to older models. Replacement cabinet handles have also caused me quite a bit of trouble.
I find it disappointing that IKEA doesn’t provide better information channels for these spare parts, especially since Hemnes is one of their most popular ranges.
Has anyone else noticed this or had difficulties obtaining other replacement parts? I would find it reassuring to have a discussion about how to still get hold of these parts.
Objectively, the following spare parts for the Hemnes series are often considered problematic:
- Drawer slides: Due to their specific dimensions, they cannot easily be replaced with universal slides.
- Hardboard back panels: Often custom-cut, making it difficult to reorder with identical quality.
- Special screws and connectors: Because IKEA frequently uses proprietary designs.
IKEA generally offers spare parts up to five years after a product is discontinued, which is relevant for the Hemnes series due to its durability. However, sourcing parts for older models can be challenging.
My tip: Check with customer service beforehand whether the spare part you need is currently in stock and, if necessary, secure spare parts early.

From my experience, these are usually the drawer slides. To be honest, I find that assumption a bit too general. Drawer slides are not the issue—they are an industry standard and offered by many manufacturers.
What’s really tricky are the original fittings used to assemble Hemnes. IKEA places so much emphasis on consistent appearance and function that many spare parts are deliberately not easily interchangeable.

Special screws and connectors: Because IKEA often uses proprietary designs. That’s exactly what I wanted to point out: these proprietary designs mean that standard replacement parts don’t fit. Anyone who thinks they can simply buy replacements from other sources will often be disappointed.
Overall, I believe it’s a deliberate IKEA strategy not to offer all parts as easy-to-replace spares—this keeps the business running.

Overall, I see it as a deliberate strategy by IKEA not to offer all parts easily as replacementsThat is an interesting theory, which I hadn’t really considered in such detail before. However, I also believe that it poses a logistical challenge for IKEA. After all, the Hemnes series has been on the market for many years with numerous variations.
I would like to return to the drawer runners. Have there been specific cases in recent years where someone searched for these parts for months or even years?
Personally, with such a long-lasting product line like Hemnes, I would have expected these wear parts to be more readily available.
Perhaps someone has more detailed experience, especially regarding the current support offered by the in-store customer service or online. This way, we can better assess delivery times.
