Hello everyone, I am planning to equip my wardrobe with an IKEA PAX system and want to make the project as durable as possible. Therefore, I am wondering: which IKEA PAX models or configurations are particularly robust in terms of everyday use, weight capacity, and material durability? I am especially interested in the frame, doors, and fittings because I want to ensure the wardrobe remains stable even after years of heavy use. Are there models that use high-quality materials or that are specifically designed for heavy loads? I would greatly appreciate any experiences or recommendations!
Hello! Great question, and not everyone can answer it right away. Basically, the PAX system consists of different series made from various materials: the more affordable options usually feature particleboard with a lacquered finish – simple wooden frame rails and doors with a foil surface tend to hold up well in these. For greater durability, you should especially consider solid wood or at least thicker MDF options for the doors, as these are more stable and less prone to warping.
The fittings are very sturdy across all PAX models, as IKEA uses reliable hinges and rollers. However, proper installation and regular maintenance, such as tightening screws, also play an important role.
Do you already have a specific version in mind?

What also plays a role is proper installation and regular maintenance, such as tightening the screws. That’s a very good point, thank you! Regarding the design, I’m considering a combination of sliding doors and hinged doors to make the best use of space. Are there differences in durability when it comes to sliding doors?
Materials are often referred to as particleboard, but I know that isn’t the most durable option. Are there models or additional options within PAX with stronger wood or frame reinforcements for upgrades?
I love my PAX system! I bought it 5 years ago, and it’s still holding up great. I chose the doors with solid wood frames, and they are really sturdy.
If you want something that truly lasts, I definitely wouldn’t cut corners on the doors. Highly recommended, because with wardrobes, the wear and tear really adds up, and you immediately notice when the quality isn’t right! Quality is definitely worth it in the long run.
