Hello everyone,

I have a KALLAX shelf from IKEA that unfortunately stands right in front of the window in my living room and receives several hours of sunlight daily. I have already noticed some initial color changes – a slight fading of the surface. Since the shelf is made of coated wood or wood-based material, I would like to know the best way to prevent fading from direct sunlight. Are there any special protective treatments, films, or measures you can recommend without having to modify or completely move the shelf? I would appreciate specific tips, including any experiences with what works in the long term. Thanks in advance!

I would recommend a UV protection film for windows. It lets in plenty of light but filters out the UV rays that cause fading.

The issue of fading in furniture, especially KALLAX, requires some planning to minimize the effect over time. Since your shelf seems to be exposed to intense sunlight daily, I recommend combining several measures:

1. UV protection films on the windows: These block up to 99% of UV rays. There are different qualities available, ranging from thin, inexpensive films to high-quality sun protection films with additional heat reduction.

2. Furniture oils or waxes often help protect wooden surfaces but are mostly ineffective on the melamine coating of KALLAX since they do not penetrate the surface. For KALLAX, special furniture varnishes with UV protection are recommended. A matte clear coat with a UV filter can be applied carefully and may slow down fading.

3. Covering with light-diffusing fabrics: A thin curtain or blinds that scatter the light reduce the intensity of sunlight exposure and protect against fading.

4. Regularly rotating the furniture: If possible, change the position of the shelf so the same area is not always exposed to the sun. This may sound trivial, but it helps prevent uneven fading.

5. If in doubt, try using a narrow plexiglass sheet as sun protection or consider installing external shading.

I am also interested to know whether the surface of your KALLAX is more glossy or matte and if you have already tried anything.

In summary, I can recommend the following: The main cause of fading is UV light, which breaks down pigments. The most effective and practical prevention is a high-quality, self-adhesive UV protection film applied to your windows. This protects furniture fabrics and surfaces effectively without obstructing the view.

Additionally, there are clear coatings with UV blockers, but these are only partially suitable for furniture like KALLAX (mostly melamine-coated) since they can sometimes alter or roughen the surface. Professional furniture restorers tend to recommend window film or movable shading solutions (such as curtains) with UV protection instead.

It is also important to avoid aggressive cleaning, as solvents can roughen the surface and accelerate fading.

If you can provide more technical details about the situation (e.g., south-facing window, exact duration of light exposure), I could offer more specific advice.
