Hello everyone, I have some older Billy shelves from IKEA at home that have become a bit worn and outdated in appearance after years of use and moving. I’m interested in learning about ways to improve the look of these older models without having to buy completely new shelves. What methods have you used to refresh the shelves’ appearance, make them more durable, or better match modern interior styles? I’m especially interested in practical and cost-effective solutions—whether through painting, applying adhesive films, replacing doors, or other creative adjustments. Thanks in advance for your tips!

Replacing the handles and knobs makes a huge difference
That sounds interesting. Can anyone recommend where to find well-fitting and high-quality handles for BILLY shelves? Mario, I’m looking for something more modern, maybe aluminum or similar, but not too expensive.

Installing LED lighting in the BILLY shelves
How did you install the lighting? Are there special kits that can be mounted easily without much electrical work?

Regarding changing the handle: Many hardware stores offer a good selection of cabinet handles that are compatible with the standard hole spacing of BILLY shelves. You can also find aluminum handles with a modern design at reasonable prices online, for example on Amazon.

Regarding lighting: I recommend LED strips with USB connectors and adhesive backing. They can be easily attached inside the shelf, are dimmable, and usually operated by a small switch or remote control. No complex electrical work is needed, just plug them in and they’re ready to use.

Yes, there are many simple plug-and-play LED kits available for shelves. Important factors to consider are, of course, size, brightness, and color temperature. For cozy reading light, I recommend warm white; for work surfaces, cool white.

Regarding handle replacement: also pay attention to the screw length, which is sometimes a bit short with BILLY, especially if you have thicker fronts.

One more quick tip for those of you who enjoy painting: If sanding is annoying or too much work, there are special bonding primers that can be applied directly onto laminate. This makes painting much easier and the paint adheres better.

Finally, apply a clear coat – and the upcycling is done.

I totally agree – I bought screws that were too short, and nothing held properly :-)

If you're looking for an easy DIY upgrade, you can also experiment with decorative panels from the hardware store. Just stick them on the back panel, the sides, or even as a shelf surface – it instantly looks stylish and is quick to do.

I also like to enhance the typical shelf pin holes with decorative plugs to give the shelf a finishing touch. 😉
