ᐅ Which types of screws are the most durable for Ikea Besta units?

PlopoHello everyone, I have been looking into the construction and stability of Ikea Besta furniture for some time, focusing specifically on the types of screws used in these units. My specific question is: Which types of screws, either standard with the Ikea Besta system or recommended as alternatives, are considered especially strong and thus best suited when reinforcing the structure or ensuring the shelves and cabinets can carry heavier loads? I am thinking about different screw shapes, materials, or other fasteners. I am interested in experiences and recommendations, including those related to forces such as vibration or lateral loads.

The screws supplied by Ikea are mainly designed for easy assembly of the furniture and not necessarily for maximum load capacity. The fact is that coarse-thread chipboard screws (usually zinc-coated) used together with dowels are generally the strongest option in most cases. However, they also have their limits when subjected to loads beyond normal installation. For higher loads, it is better to switch to metal screws with greater tensile and shear strength – if Ikea allows that.
The question about the most load-bearing screws for the Ikea Besta system is very valid, especially when using the furniture beyond its standard purpose. In practice, the connectors used in Besta (cam connectors, Minifix screws) are not designed to carry high loads relying solely on the screw. For critical points, it is recommended to use wood screws with a diameter of at least 4 mm (0.16 inches) and a length of at least 40 mm (1.6 inches), made of stainless steel or galvanized steel, ideally with coarse threads to ensure good grip in the particleboard. Additionally, the load should be distributed evenly across multiple screws.

What I like about Ikea Besta screws: They are actually practical all-rounders, but if you’re really looking for more stability, you should pay attention not only to the screws but also to the material. 😎
- Standard screws are fine for light loads
- Chipboard screws with coarse threads are the hero for heavier loads
- If you want it rock-solid, use metal brackets and reinforced screws
This way, your furniture will stay sturdy even at the next barbecue!
