Hello everyone, I recently noticed that some of my Malm drawers from Ikea stick and are difficult to open despite a lot of effort. This is especially frustrating because the drawers usually operate very smoothly. I suspect that the runners or the mechanics might not be working optimally anymore, but I’m not sure what exactly is causing the problem or what the best solution might be. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to effectively deal with sticking Malm drawers, which potential issues I should check, and what simple measures could help? Thanks in advance!

First, check the drawer slides for any dirt or damage. It often helps to remove the drawer completely and clean the slides. After that, you can apply some silicone spray or candle wax to the slides, which usually improves the glide.

Hello henny52, to thoroughly address the issue, I recommend the following: First, completely remove the drawer from the furniture unit to gain full access to the sliding mechanisms. Then carefully check whether the metal or plastic tracks are bent, rusted, or blocked by foreign objects. Especially inspect the rollers or ball bearings, if present, as they can become clogged with dust or small particles.

Next, clean the guide rails thoroughly – use a slightly damp cloth and, if necessary, a mild cleaner to remove old grease residues. Be careful not to use harsh chemicals, as some materials may be damaged.

After cleaning, apply a lubricant, preferably a silicone spray or a special furniture glide lubricant, as regular oil can attract dust and cause more problems with delicate tracks over time.

Important: If the drawers stick, it may also be due to incorrect installation, so check if all guide rails are properly aligned and securely fastened. Sometimes screws loosen after prolonged use, which affects smooth operation.

I’m curious: do the drawers stick on only one side or overall? And does this happen with all drawers or just a few? This could indicate a warping issue with the furniture.

Good question! Actually, it’s mainly the two bottom drawers that tend to stick a bit, mostly on the right side. The top three drawers slide smoothly. I haven’t taken the drawers out yet, but the runners feel a bit uneven when I run my hand along them.

It's great that you noticed this so carefully! 🙂 Sticking drawers can be frustrating, but with a little patience, you can fix it! Try cleaning the drawer slides and applying some lubricant – this often makes a big difference. If the right side is sticking, the screws on the drawer might be loose or the slide could be bent. Don't give up, you can do it! 🙂

Hello henny52,

Here is a brief guide that often helps with sticking Malm drawers:

1. Fully remove the drawer and place it on a soft surface to carefully inspect the sliding rails.
2. Check if any screws on the drawer or the sliding rails are loose – all should be securely tightened.
3. Clean the sliding rails thoroughly with a dry cloth to remove dust and debris. For stubborn dirt, you can use a mild cleaning agent and then let everything dry well.
4. Lubricant: Use a silicone-based spray, as it doesn’t stick or attract dirt. Apply it sparingly to the sliding rails and ball-bearing rollers.
5. Reinstall the drawer and test its movement. Make sure the rails are properly aligned and seated evenly.

Tip: If the drawers stick on the right side, check whether the furniture frame is warped, which can usually be fixed with a slight adjustment.

If you like, I can also prepare a checklist to help you proceed systematically.
