DakuliHello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of assembling an Ikea Metod kitchen system and want to prepare as best as possible in advance. The manual is comprehensive, but I am looking for tools that are especially helpful for installing Ikea Metod and that really make the work easier.
Which tools are particularly useful when assembling Ikea Metod? I’m not only referring to standard household tools, but also to special aids or items that have proven to be indispensable in everyday use. I am especially interested in tools recommended for assembling the cabinets, doors, and particularly for mounting them to walls – and what to watch out for to avoid mistakes or damage.
I look forward to tips, personal experiences, or also advice on which tools might be overrated.

Which tools are especially helpful when assembling Ikea Metod?Hello Dakuli,
great question! Ikea Metod is basically modular and fairly easy to assemble, but investing in some useful tools is definitely worthwhile. Recommended tools include:
- A cordless drill with depth stop, to correctly install the dowels and screws without damaging the wood.
- A small rubber mallet to gently tap in dowels or biscuits.
- A spirit level, absolutely essential to hang the upper cabinets straight.
- A rotary hammer drill or hammer drill, especially when mounting the cabinets on a solid wall.
- A tape measure and pencil for precise measuring.
You can start without specialized tools, but these helpers will certainly save time and avoid frustration.
If you have any questions about specific steps, feel free to ask!
From my experience, having a good cordless drill that is not too heavy and provides enough power makes a big difference.
When I installed my kitchen in my old apartment, my cheap drill was my biggest weak point. At one point, I borrowed a better one – and the assembly went much more smoothly.
A small angle grinder also helped me with minor adjustments, as sometimes doors or panels needed slight realignment.
One piece of advice: stay calm. Sometimes the assembly is more demanding than expected, but with the right tools, you can manage it!

A cordless screwdriver with a depth stop to properly install the dowels and screws without damaging the wood. This is often the key during installation – the correct screw depth is essential because Ikea particle boards and coverings cannot handle screws that are driven in too deep. If you use a cordless screwdriver, I highly recommend setting a torque wrench or an electronic depth stop.
A sturdy spirit level is also indispensable, not only for wall mounting but also for aligning base cabinets or countertops. Especially during the assembly process, you should check repeatedly with the spirit level to avoid future errors and misaligned fronts.
For securing the wall cabinets: a pipe wrench or adjustable wrench to fix the brackets is often helpful since the supplied screw heads and screwdrivers are sometimes too small or of low quality.
A small tip: when using longer screws or anchors, a good drill with an appropriate hammer mode is worthwhile if you are drilling into a solid wall. Avoid cheap drill bits – they often break very quickly.
What type of wall do you have?
By the way, for simple kitchen cabinets, the provided tools are often sufficient, but for options like tall cabinets or refrigerator paneling, it is worth using high-quality tools.

- Cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque
- Spirit level
- Drill with appropriate drill bits
Nothing more is needed. Everything else is comfort tools.

Even a angle grinder for small adjustments helped meTo be honest, I think using an angle grinder for assembling Ikea Metod cabinets is a bit exaggerated.
Sometimes I wonder why many people don’t take a little more care when marking and preparing, instead of fixing things roughly with heavy tools. The system is actually designed for DIY enthusiasts – a cordless drill and a spirit level should be enough.
But of course, if someone wants to build audiophile-quality kitchen furniture, they take whatever tools they can get.
