Hello everyone, I’m currently planning the installation of my new Ikea Metod kitchen unit and wondering if there is an optimal order to assemble the individual modules. Specifically, I am interested in whether it is better to fully assemble the base cabinets first before installing the wall cabinets, or if another sequence might be more practical. Besides making the work easier, I want to avoid the need for later adjustments or modifications. Is there a generally proven assembly plan or any special tips to keep in mind when installing the Metod kitchen system? Any advice regarding stability or the order of wall mounting and countertop installation would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your input!

I usually connect the base cabinets first, so you have a stable unit.

That may be true in many cases, but one should not forget that the greater weight and the rigid assembly also have disadvantages, especially if the floor is not completely level.

I consider it advisable to initially align and level the base cabinets individually with great precision, as this allows for a more accurate adjustment to any unevenness.

Afterwards, you can fix the assembled kitchen run to the wall in one go.

That is correct, but whether to attach the cabinets to the wall only after all modules are connected ultimately depends on the conditions of the room. What is important is that all modules are securely fixed and balanced to prevent any later stress.

That makes sense to me, thanks. It depends on whether you use a grid on the wall directly or take the floor as your reference. Do any of you have experience on whether it’s better to first establish a level surface on the floor or align more with the wall? I’m asking because the wall in my kitchen is not perfectly straight.

For Ikea Metod, the precise alignment is done via the adjustable feet of the base cabinets – floor unevenness is compensated through the cabinet legs. The wall is then used as the final fixing point.

Therefore, I recommend:
- First, adjust the feet so that all base cabinets are level and aligned, despite any floor issues.
- Then secure the connected cabinets to the wall, even if the wall is not perfectly straight.
- Finally, align the countertop and, if needed, compensate small unevenness with shims or suitable mounting materials.

Extra tip: The integrated connector fittings between the cabinets usually allow minor adjustments to correct small angle deviations.
