Hello everyone,

A few days ago, I unfortunately experienced water damage to my Kallax shelf (IKEA). The top panel is now noticeably swollen in some areas and feels quite spongy. Although the wood veneer still looks intact, I believe the stability is already compromised.

I’m wondering if a Kallax panel like this can still be saved after water damage, or if I should just go ahead and get a replacement. Are there any repair methods that make sense and provide a lasting solution, or is the material too sensitive?

I’ve considered sanding down the entire panel and treating it with wood glue or something similar, but maybe that’s a lost cause.

Does anyone have experience with swollen Kallax furniture wood after water damage?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hello Sele5,

I’ve seen this several times with Kallax boards after water damage. The material is MDF with a veneer, and when moisture gets in, it swells very quickly.

The important thing is to let it dry completely first! This can take a while, especially if the board is thick. After that, the surface can usually be smoothed with sandpaper, as long as the veneer is not completely damaged.

Whether repairing with wood glue makes sense depends on how deep the damage is. Glue alone won’t help with swollen MDF material. In this case, you can try carefully cutting out or sanding away the damaged areas and then filling the gaps with wood filler.

If the board is only slightly swollen and not soaked through, refinishing is often possible.

To improve appearance and provide protection later, a new coat of paint or clear varnish might be enough.

In summary: complete restoration is possible if you have patience for drying and some sanding skills. However, if the board is severely swollen, replacement is usually easier. Good luck! 🙂

Drying is essential. Only when everything is completely dry can you decide if it still makes sense to proceed. For Kallax, replacements are usually inexpensive, and sometimes buying new is a better option.

Water damage to Kallax usually means replacement. MDF swells severely and cannot be restored. Drying first, then buying a new one.

I agree with BeAndrea – patience really is the key. 🙂 If you’re ready for a sanding marathon and some filler work, you can definitely make a big difference.

But honestly, a Kallax shelf isn’t exactly a luxury piece of furniture, so sometimes just replacing the top is enough. 🙂

In the end, a good sense of humor and some sandpaper will get you far!

Hey Sele5,

I know the feeling, damage like that can be really frustrating. I had a similar issue with a Billy; long drying times and gentle sanding helped. Of course, it’s not a 100% like-new condition, but better than throwing it away.

Try to make the best of it—there are always options! And if you buy new, just remind yourself to be more waterproof this time. 😉

All the best!
