Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to modify some IKEA Brimnes cabinets to make them easier to handle and more flexible, without losing stability. My goal is to rework the modules myself so that they are easier to transport and assemble. The cabinets are fairly large and heavy, which makes modifying them at home and during a move more difficult. Therefore, I am looking for proven methods or tips on how to disassemble or alter individual modules or components more easily without damaging the construction.

I am especially interested in:
- Which screws or fasteners are best suited for disassembly
- Whether removing or replacing certain parts can significantly reduce the weight
- Advice on working with the typical wood-based panels and fiberboards used in the Brimnes cabinets

Has anyone had experience modifying this series and can provide specific advice on how to make the process easier and more efficient? Recommendations regarding the necessary tools would also be helpful.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

The IKEA BRIMNES cabinets are mainly made of coated fiberboard panels, held together with cam lock fittings and chipboard screws. For easier disassembly, here are some precise tips:

- Cam locks and dowels are usually the weak points for quick removal. By turning the cam locks with a screwdriver, the individual modules can be separated relatively easily.
- A Phillips or Torx screwdriver is suitable for the screws, as these will not damage the material.
- Removing the back panels can significantly reduce the weight, but careful storage is important to avoid breaking the panels.
- Be cautious when levering at connection points to avoid chipping the coated material.

In terms of tools, I recommend a good screwdriver with a soft grip, possibly a cordless drill with torque control, and a rubber mallet for gentle disassembly. Using this method, parts can usually be taken apart quickly. It is advisable to follow a systematic approach and label each part for easier reassembly later.

That's correct. Loosening the cam locks, removing the screws – modules can be quickly separated. Removing the back panel significantly reduces weight. A screwdriver or the appropriate bit is essential.

I’d like to add that when modifying the BRIMNES cabinets, a lot of patience is required, especially if you want to keep the sturdy connections intact. You need to be particularly careful when removing the back panel, as it is often attached with nails and can easily splinter. A narrow putty knife or a special levering tool can help to gently loosen the panel.

It can also be helpful to take photos before assembly and mark the parts; this makes reassembling much easier.

Regarding tools, in addition to a screwdriver and putty knife, fine sandpaper is useful for smoothing out small chips on the edges.

This way, the cabinet remains functional after modification, and handling is easier without significantly affecting the appearance.
