Hello everyone, I’m currently preparing for my move and have fully disassembled an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit, including the doors. My question is: what is the best way to store the individual KALLAX parts to prevent damage during the move? I’m interested in both packaging options and storage tips, for example, whether and how the doors should be protected, or if it’s better to stack the parts or store them flat. It would also be helpful if anyone could share practical experience with KALLAX furniture during moves, especially regarding stability and protection. Thanks in advance for your help!

An important point when storing KALLAX parts after disassembly is to keep the parts flat to prevent warping. The doors should also be protected with bubble wrap or blankets, as they are prone to scratches. For transport, it is advisable to pack the shelves and back panels separately, ideally in boxes or sturdy materials to prevent them from shifting. Stacking is possible but should be done carefully—heavier parts at the bottom, thinner ones on top. It is also important to keep the stored parts free from moisture to avoid swelling or expansion of the material.

Always store KALLAX parts flat. Protect doors with blankets. Do not place heavy items on top.

I would add: When storing the shelf for an extended period, put screws and small fittings in separate bags and attach them to a matching part or keep them in a labeled container. This helps prevent any pieces from getting lost. Additionally, doors can be leaned against a wall, well padded, if there is no flat storage surface available. For the move itself, it is helpful to secure the parts well during loading to prevent shifting.

Wrap doors carefully with foam or old blankets. When stacking, always place the heaviest items at the bottom.

Thanks for the tip. Is it enough to protect the doors with just blankets, or is bubble wrap really significantly better? I want to keep both cost and effort low while ensuring the best possible protection. Are there differences in the sensitivity of doors depending on the material (e.g., high gloss vs. laminate)?
