Hello everyone, I have some damage on my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet doors, mainly superficial scratches and small dents on the doors. Since replacing them is quite expensive and complicated, I would like to know how I can repair my Metod doors myself with the simplest possible methods. I am especially interested in tips and instructions for preparation (e.g., cleaning, sanding), filling dents or scratches, suitable materials (e.g., filler paste, wood putty, paint), and of course advice on sanding and painting afterward, so the doors look as good as new. Does anyone have practical experience or recommendations that can be done without professional tools? Thanks in advance for your helpful tips!

Hello TARDAN,

I can gladly help you with repairing your Ikea Metod doors. Here is a step-by-step guide I often use:

- Cleaning: First, thoroughly clean the door with a mild dish soap to remove grease and dirt.
- Sanding: Then, gently sand the damaged areas with fine sandpaper (grit 220-320) to create a slightly rough surface for the filler.
- Filling: For small dents or scratches, you can use wood filler or furniture repair putty. Apply the filler thinly and allow it to dry completely.
- Smoothing: Afterwards, sand the filled areas smooth until they are flush with the door surface.
- Painting: Finally, repaint the surface with a suitable paint (preferably acrylic or alkyd enamel, which are water-resistant and flexible). Apply several thin coats, allowing each to dry well.

Common mistakes include applying the filler too thickly or sanding unevenly, which becomes noticeable later. If you don’t know the exact color shade, sometimes a small leftover piece or a color sample from the manufacturer can help.

I hope this guide is useful for you!

This warning is very important because many people believe that using as much material as possible will “seal” everything during repairs. However, applying a layer that is too thick causes tension while drying and usually leads to cracks afterward. Additionally, it should always be kept in mind that Ikea Metod doors often have a plastic or foil-covered surface, which means filler alone is not enough to restore the surface texture.

In my opinion, not only basic fillers should be used here, but possibly an appropriate primer for the foil to ensure good adhesion of the paint. Especially with plastic-coated surfaces, the area must be carefully prepared; otherwise, the repair will quickly come off again.

Are there any reports about which materials really work well with foil-covered Metod doors without needing to fully re-coat or repaint them?

Hello TARDAN and everyone else,

I’m glad this topic has come up! =) A few months ago, I repaired several damaged Metod doors myself and want to encourage you: it’s definitely doable to fix it on your own!

My experience:
- When sanding, always start with very fine sandpaper, otherwise a small scratch can easily turn into a bigger flaw.
- For dents, I used special wood filler from the home improvement store, which dries well and can be sanded very smoothly.
- When painting, apply several thin coats rather than one thick one to avoid unsightly runs.
- And very important: be patient! Allow everything to dry thoroughly and lightly sand between coats.

I was honestly surprised by how well the result turned out and how much fun it was. You really feel like a kitchen pro! 😊

Good luck, and don’t get discouraged!
