Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Platsa wardrobe at home where the back panel is damaged. It’s the thin MDF board that is fitted at the back, and unfortunately it is torn in several places and warped. As a result, the cabinet no longer stands completely straight and the stability seems compromised.

My question is about the best way to replace or repair the back panel. Does IKEA offer replacement parts that I can order directly, or would it be better to have a new panel cut to size myself?

It would also be helpful to know if there are specific recommendations for the material and thickness in case I need to source something on my own.

Maybe someone has experience with this and can share helpful tips on how to dismantle and reattach the back panel so the cabinet remains stable and straight.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Hello annika62,

First of all: Very well formulated and specific question, which makes it easier to give helpful answers!

Regarding your question: IKEA usually does not supply individual back panels for PLATSA, at least not officially through customer service. If you still have the purchase receipt, it might still be worth giving them a call, as sometimes they have spare parts available in their warehouse.

On the other hand, the back panel for PLATSA is usually a thin MDF or hardboard panel about 3 mm (0.1 inches) thick. You can have this made yourself at a hardware store or by a carpenter. It is important that the dimensions are exact so that the cabinet remains stable.

Tip: For better stability, you can also use a slightly thicker back panel, for example 4 mm (0.15 inches), which you can have trimmed slightly at the edges before installing.

For assembly:
- Empty the cabinet completely
- Possibly loosen the side panels a bit to make room for the new panel
- Position the back panel and fix it with small nails or screws if the original system does not allow this

I hope this helps you for now! If you like, I can explain in more detail how to measure and mark the back panel.

I completely understand your issue, annika62. Some time ago, I had a similar problem with my PLATSA back panel – this thin board cracked after I moved, and honestly, I wasn’t sure how to best fix it.

I also tried that without success. What helped me was getting a custom-cut wooden board. It’s important not only to ensure precise measurements but also to choose a board that won’t warp easily, since the back panel significantly contributes to the stability.

I can only recommend that! And if you’re handy, you can use small screws instead of the usual nails, which provides even more support without damaging the side panels.

I know it can sometimes feel like something is broken that’s not easily replaced – but with patience, you’ll get your cabinet back in great shape. It’s worth sticking with it!

Hi annika62,

Just have a new MDF board cut to the same dimensions at the hardware store (3-4 mm / 0.12-0.16 inches). That works best. Remove the back panel, put the new one in, and secure it with small nails. No IKEA replacement parts needed.

Hello annika62,

you explained your situation well, so I’d like to add a few more tips:

1. If you have the panels cut yourself, try to choose an HDF or MDF board with a smooth surface to prevent splintering.

2. If you cannot completely empty the cabinet, you can carefully loosen the middle section with a utility knife and remove the back panel in segments.

3. When assembling, make sure all edges align flush and the panel is securely nailed or fixed with small screws to the appropriate framing studs of the PLATSA carcass.

4. It is sometimes recommended to reinforce the back panel along the edges with some wood glue, which increases stability.

5. If you want to protect the surface of the back panel, you can lightly paint or treat it with a wood preservative before installation.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask if you want more detailed information!

Good morning annika62,

Additionally, it should be noted that when choosing a replacement back panel, the moisture level of the room is important. A simple MDF board can warp or swell in more humid environments.

If your cabinet is located in areas with higher humidity (kitchen, laundry room), I recommend selecting a suitable coated or impregnated back panel.

For fastening:
- You probably already have thin nails (16 mm (5/8 inch) furniture nails)
- Alternatively, small clamps or corner brackets can help by increasing pressure on the panel

The stability can be significantly improved by a properly cut back panel, even if it requires some effort. A suitable tool set for installation is also helpful.

If you like, I can send you my tool list that I use to carry out the renovation neatly.
