ᐅ Is it possible to assemble IKEA PLATSA shelves without the back panel?

kaleixHello everyone,
I am considering assembling my IKEA PLATSA shelving unit without the included back panel. My main question is: Can the PLATSA units be built without the back panel without losing stability and rigidity?
I find it more visually appealing and intend to use the shelving as a room divider, so an open back would be an advantage. Does anyone have practical experience or recommendations regarding whether omitting the back panel is safe, or if it might cause issues with load-bearing capacity or resistance to twisting?
Thanks in advance for your insights!

Hello kaleix,
Regarding the basics: IKEA PLATSA shelves are modular, and the back panel actually plays a major role in stability. Without the back panel, the lateral stability is missing – the shelf can twist or tip over more easily.
If you want to omit the back panel, make sure that
- the shelf is secured to the wall (e.g., with brackets),
- you add additional reinforcements if necessary,
- and the load is distributed evenly and not too heavy.
In conclusion: It is possible, but it does not provide the full stability that would be given with the back panel.

Yes, you can assemble the PLATSA shelves without the back panel. However, the shelf will be less stable and more prone to warping. That is true, but I believe it’s important to be more precise here: When assembling the PLATSA shelves without the back panel, you don’t just lose stability—you also compromise safety, especially in homes with children or pets.
Without the back panel, you lose a critical diagonal reinforcement that prevents the unit from tipping over. As a result, the shelf becomes more vulnerable to damage unless it is secured in another way.
So, the back panel should not be omitted for purely aesthetic reasons without considering alternative safety measures.
I would like to add some facts about the construction of the IKEA PLATSA shelves:
- The back panel functions as a diagonal brace that keeps the frame structure of the shelf rigid.
- Without it, the tendency to twist under load increases significantly.
- The assembly instructions recommend always installing the back panel unless alternative stabilizations are used.
Therefore, if the back panel is not used, it is essential to secure the unit to a wall or floor to prevent accidents and material damage.

Brief Guide for Assembly Without a Back Panel:
1. Assemble the frame according to the instructions.
2. Omit the back panel for now.
3. Ensure the shelving unit can be securely fixed to a wall – this prevents tipping.
4. Optional: Attach additional corner brackets or metal profiles to the sides to increase stability.
5. When loading, make sure there is no uneven weight distribution on one side.
Common Mistakes:
- Leaving out the back panel and placing the shelving unit freestanding.
- Insecure attachment, which leads to risk of tipping.
If you keep these points in mind, it is possible to assemble without the back panel, but from a safety perspective, it is not ideal.
