ᐅ Why do my BILLY shelves wobble even though they are secured to the wall?

TAUDRA30Hello everyone, I have an issue with my BILLY shelves from IKEA, which I mounted on the wall some time ago. Despite properly installing the supplied wall fixings, the shelves still wobble noticeably, especially when leaning on them or placing heavy objects. The shelves stand on a stable, level floor, and the screws are tightened securely. I’m wondering if this could be related to the wall structure, the type of fixing used, or the shelf installation itself. Has anyone experienced this or has any advice on what might cause the wobbling despite the fixings and how I can improve the stability permanently? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
Hello TAUDRA30, I’m very familiar with the problem of wobbly BILLY shelves even when they are fixed to the wall 😄. Often, the issue is that although the shelves are anchored to the wall, there is still some slight play between the shelf boards and the side panels—this is similar to a chair with a small amount of looseness that wobbles when you sit on it. A simple trick is to reinforce the joints using small plastic washers or felt pads. Also, check that all the shelves are securely seated and that there are no loose dowels or screws. Sometimes it helps to tension the shelf slightly against the wall, for example with additional angle brackets that create a bit more pull. Hope this helps you out! 😊
Hello TAUDRA30, your issue is actually a common case with BILLY shelves, as the model is designed for simplicity rather than maximum stability. First, it is important to know the exact condition of the wall: is it a solid masonry wall, drywall, or a partition wall? The type of wall anchors you use is critical. For example, if you only use standard plastic anchors in drywall, the wobbling could be caused by the wall material. Special cavity or heavy-duty anchors for drywall are recommended. Another point is the mounting height and the load distribution principle. BILLY shelves are generally designed for lighter loads. If you place heavy books on the top or distribute the weight unevenly, the shelf may still move despite being anchored. Also, check if the bottom back panel is properly recessed and fixed, as this stabilizes the shelf horizontally. Ultimately, a combination of a sturdy wall, suitable anchors, correct installation of the back panel, and possibly a second mounting line in the middle will help.

The type of wall plugs you use is critical. I agree, that is one of the main causes of unexpected wobbling. However, I wonder: Has TAUDRA30 checked whether the plugs are actually anchored in the correct substrate and not just in the plaster layer or a less load-bearing surface? Equally important is whether the screws have been tightened to the optimal torque – too tight and the material gets damaged, too loose and it wobbles.

A simple trick is to stabilize the connection points with small plastic washers or felt strips. These measures usually only help secondarily if the actual wall fixing is not secure. The cause almost always lies in the wall fixing itself or the material quality of the wall.
In addition, deformation of the wooden parts, for example due to moisture, could cause stresses leading to wobbling. A close inspection of the condition and dimensional stability would be advisable here.
Therefore, I would recommend first conducting a professional plug and wall test, followed by a targeted check of the installation and material quality.
