Hello everyone,

After using my Billy shelf for several years, I’ve noticed that the doors increasingly squeak when I open or close them. I’m curious about the most common causes of this squeaking in Billy shelves.

I have already tried lubricating the hinges, but without much success. Maybe it’s related to the adjustment or another component?

I would be very grateful for helpful tips, especially if you can explain how to identify and fix the possible causes yourself.

The most common causes can usually be divided into three categories.

Thanks! That helps a lot. Could you briefly explain how to adjust it properly? So far, I've only tried to hang the doors straight without knowing where to start. Does Ikea provide instructions for the Billy shelf hinge?

Also, can the squeaking come from the frame if it is slightly warped?

Hello KNUT34,

Regarding the adjustment of the Billy doors: Usually, there are two screws holding the hinge in place. The front screw typically adjusts the door’s alignment to the left or right, while the other screw allows for height adjustment.

Ikea often provides a brief installation guide, but fine tuning requires a lot of careful handling.

On the topic of a warped frame: Yes, if the cabinet box is warped or becomes warped, squeaking sounds can occur under tension, especially where parts of the material come into contact. In such cases, usually only a readjustment or relaxing the frame helps, for example by loosening screws.

I consider this explanation somewhat pessimistic. Often, squeaking is simply a sign of insufficient maintenance.

I suspect that those who regularly care for their doors don’t need to worry about warped frames. Of course, furniture placed in damp rooms might be more prone to deformation.

If oiling alone doesn’t help, check whether the hinges are properly aligned or if the screws are loose. Even a slight adjustment of the door position can work wonders.

Sure. Here’s how it works:

- Carefully remove the door.
- Locate the three screws on each hinge: two at the top, one at the bottom.
- One screw controls horizontal adjustment; the other controls vertical alignment. With small turns, you can position the door precisely to the millimeter.
- When reinstalling the door, make sure it doesn’t bind and closes evenly.

As for the frame: if it’s warped, that can actually cause friction. A slight distortion is usually noticeable by uneven gaps between the door and the cabinet. In extreme cases, further adjustment or replacement of parts may be necessary.

I hope this helps!
