Hello everyone,
I recently bought some Malm furniture and now I have the challenge that I also have pets at home – specifically, two rather playful cats and a dog, who like to scratch the furniture or leave paw prints.
My question is: What is the best way to care for Malm furniture when you have pets in the house? Are there any special tips for minimizing scratches from cats, which cleaning products are suitable for the surface, and how can I protect the furniture from wear or stains without disturbing the animals?
I want to keep my furniture looking nice for a long time, but at the same time, I don’t want to use harsh products that could harm or scare my pets.
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello Mintau,
First of all, I think it’s great that you are already considering how to care for your Malm furniture in relation to pets. These pieces usually have a lacquered surface, which can be sensitive to scratches and moisture.
Here are a few tips for care and protection:
1. Cleaning: It’s best to use a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Scrubbing hard or using harsh cleaning products can damage the lacquer.
2. Scratches: Malm furniture is often laminated or lacquered. Minor scratches can be repaired with special furniture repair pens or wax available at hardware stores.
3. Protection against pets:
- For cats: Most cat claws cause scratches on wood or lacquered surfaces. A scratching post near the furniture can help provide a distraction.
- For dogs: Keep paws clean, especially after being outside, to avoid bringing dirt and moisture onto the furniture.
4. Additionally, you could apply a thin protective film that is transparent and barely changes the original appearance. This reduces the risk of lasting damage.
5. Avoid using sharp chemicals or solvents for cleaning, as these can damage the lacquer.
In summary: gentle cleaning, repairing small damage with furniture pens, and providing alternatives for pets will help maintain the look of your Malm furniture for a long time.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Hello Mintau,
I can relate to this topic well since I have two cats myself and also own Malm furniture. It’s a balancing act between furniture care and the well-being of the pets.
Regarding rotofra’s quote
I’d like to add that the choice of cleaning products really matters when it comes to maintenance. For example, I use microfiber cloths with a few drops of a mild, neutral dishwashing detergent, which protects the finish and doesn’t leave protective films where dirt can easily stick.
When it comes to protecting against scratches, sprays that deter cats from the furniture without harming them have been helpful for us. It’s important, however, to test these products carefully so they don’t cause excessive stress to your animals.
Another recommendation is to keep your cats well occupied because boredom tends to lead to scratching in undesired places. A few toys and a scratching post near the furniture are invaluable.
I know how frustrating it can be when a beloved piece of furniture gets damaged, but with good routines, you can prevent a lot! 🙂

Hello Mintau!
It’s great that you’re asking here about your Malm furniture and pets! 🙂
I have the same situation at home with two cats and can share a few tips.
My favorite solution: I bought flexible furniture protectors that you can stick on corners and surfaces. They are barely noticeable and offer excellent protection against scratches and worn spots.
I also use a gentle, natural cleaning product regularly to prevent lint or pet hair from settling.
And hey, give your furry friends extra scratching options – they love that! This distracts them perfectly so they leave your furniture alone.
Good luck! You’ll definitely manage it! 🙂

As an additional tip: if you want to touch up scratches, make sure to use furniture markers in the right colors and test them first on an inconspicuous area.

Finally, here’s my in-house tip: you can occasionally use a furniture wax or polish made specifically for lacquered surfaces, but not too often and avoid using it on veneered Malm surfaces, as it can cause streaking.
