jopauHello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of disassembling my Ikea Pax wardrobe as carefully and efficiently as possible for an upcoming move.
Since the wardrobe consists of several modules with sliding doors and interior fittings, I want to know the best way to take it apart to avoid damage during transport and to make reassembly easier.
Are there any special tools or techniques that have proven especially useful? How should I handle the sliding doors? And is it recommended to systematically label or organize screws and other small parts?
I look forward to your experiences and helpful tips!

A structured approach is really useful here.
First: have your tools ready, ideally a Phillips screwdriver, possibly an Allen key, and a small hammer.
The sliding doors are quite delicate. It’s best to remove them by unlocking the top track – usually, the doors can be lifted up and then pulled forward slightly to take out.
During disassembly, it’s advisable to collect screws and similar items in small labeled containers or bags to avoid losing anything for reassembly.
The interior fittings (clothes rails, drawers, shelves) should be removed first; this makes the main structure lighter. When disassembling the cabinet components, it is helpful to keep a record of the order, for example by taking photos or making brief notes.

The sliding doors are quite delicate.Absolutely! These things are real diva doors when it comes to disassembly! 😄 My tip: have a second person help you remove them, not just because of the weight, but also because the tracks can sometimes be pretty stubborn.
And a little secret: when sorting the screws, label them with small tags or put them in labeled bags – this saves a lot of headaches during reassembly. I always use old jam jars for that – sturdy and reusable!
Good luck! And remember, a closet is just a bunch of wood plus screws. You’ve got this!

One additional question: What about the weight? Do I need to completely disassemble the individual modules, or can I mostly keep them assembled if I remove the doors and interior fittings?
Would you recommend dismantling the cabinet frames, or is it sufficient to transport them as whole units? Is there a point where the effort becomes worthwhile?
If there is enough space and the vehicle is large enough, remove the doors and interior fittings while leaving the frame intact.
If the cabinet is too heavy or bulky, disassemble it.
However, be careful: use a screwdriver to open the panels and carcass, do not force them apart.

If a larger vehicle is available, you can transport the modules with the doors removed by loading them carefully.
However, disassembling is usually better since Ikea PAX furniture is fixed together with dowels and screws that can be damaged if transported fully assembled.
My advice: Make a list of the modules and their weights, then decide. Also consider the stairs during the move—maneuvering cabinet parts in stairwells can be a good reason to disassemble.
