ᐅ Is the finish on the KALLAX really as delicate as people say?

Plozar52Hello everyone,
I am considering getting a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA, but I’ve often heard that the finish on this furniture can be quite delicate. I’m mainly interested in how durable the surface coating really is when the unit is used in a fixed spot, without heavy wear and tear, but still within a normal household with children and pets.
Are the surfaces really as prone to scratches, abrasion, or discoloration as frequently reported? And what about maintenance: is wiping down with a damp cloth sufficient, or are special cleaners needed?
Does anyone have firsthand experience with the finish on the KALLAX, especially regarding long-term everyday use? It would be great if you could provide a realistic impression – ideally also differentiating between the various color options, in case the quality varies.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Plozar52,
I’ve been using my KALLAX in the white version for about 2 years now, and from my experience, yes, the color is somewhat prone to wear—but there’s no need to panic. Of course, if you scratch the surface with a key or sharp-edged objects, it will get scratched. But hey, that’s normal for painted or coated furniture.
As long as you use the shelf normally, like putting stuff in and wiping it occasionally, nothing dramatic happens. Over my 2 years of use, a few minor signs of wear have appeared, but honestly, they don’t bother me.
One tip: I clean it with warm water and a bit of dish soap—no harsh cleaners or abrasives—this helps keep the color looking good.
And yes, if you have kids or pets around, accidents will happen—but that’s true everywhere, not just with the KALLAX. So I hope my experience helps you! 🙂

GUSTAVO5612 Jun 2021 09:45Hello Plozar52,
to address your question about the sensitivity of the finish on the KALLAX shelving unit in more detail, I would like to share some technical information and usage tips.
The KALLAX is made from a basic particleboard core with a melamine resin-coated surface. This coating is applied during production using a roller process and is comparatively thin and less durable than, for example, painted solid wood surfaces or thick laminate layers.
This is basically true; besides mechanical abrasion from scratches or sharp-edged objects, the surface is also sensitive to aggressive chemicals (e.g., solvents, strong cleaning agents).
Impact on everyday use:
- The edges are often the weak points: impacts can cause the coating to peel or chip.
- Discoloration from direct sunlight or prolonged contact with strongly colored substances (e.g., red wine, ink) is possible.
Recommendations:
- Regular gentle wiping with a slightly damp microfiber cloth; avoid heavy scrubbing.
- Avoid contact with sharp objects.
- For minor scratches, gently applying furniture wax or color-matching repair kits can sometimes help.
It would be useful to know which finish you prefer and how heavily the unit will be used. Will it mainly be in a living room with moderate use, or in a children’s room with high levels of wear?
Looking forward to your feedback!

Hello,
Based on the available technical specifications and numerous user experiences, I can summarize the following:
The color and surface coating of the KALLAX is a standard melamine resin-coated panel. It is not primarily designed for heavy mechanical stress.
I fully agree with this. The corners in particular are vulnerable. Additionally, the surfaces are sensitive to harsh or abrasive cleaning agents.
For optimal preservation, the following is recommended:
- Cleaning only with a damp, soft cloth and mild dish soap
- No abrasive cleaners or alcohol-based products
- Avoid direct sunlight exposure
- For visible scratches, use special repair kits suitable for melamine resin surfaces
In short: The color of the KALLAX is not exceptionally sensitive, but compared to painted solid wood or durable laminate surfaces, it is somewhat less resistant.
This should be taken into account when making a purchase decision, especially if the item will be subject to heavy use.
