Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and wanted to use it to hold some heavy equipment (e.g., an amplifier and a turntable). After assembling it and placing the equipment inside, the shelf rattles quite a bit whenever there is slight movement on the floor or when handling the devices. The rattling clearly occurs due to the slight movement of the individual shelves and frame under load or vibration.

I’m interested to know how you best secure or stabilize this shelving unit to eliminate the rattling. Are there reliable methods, such as using clamps, additional wooden slats, or special mounting plates? Who has experience securely fixing heavy equipment in a KALLAX without rattling? I would greatly appreciate any tips or suggestions for affordable materials I could use to stabilize it.

That’s exactly the point no one wants to admit when it comes to KALLAX. Many people greatly overestimate its stability, especially with heavy equipment.

I’m skeptical about it: If you want to place heavy electronics like turntables or amplifiers in such a shelving system, you should get something more robust from the start. Sure, KALLAX looks nice and is affordable, but technically it’s a lightly flexible furniture system, not a high-end cabinet.

In my opinion, these “DIY fixes” are always just a compromise. Either you accept the creaky construction, or you invest in proper furniture. Anything else is like fighting windmills.

Of course, I’ll probably get comments now about how IKEA shelves are super cheap and versatile, but I see a gap between expectations and reality.

I would like to add a technical perspective: The rattling mainly occurs due to insufficient reinforcement of the frame elements. The shelving unit is made of engineered wood panels, which are sensitive to stress from dynamic forces.

If the shelf stands freely without wall anchoring, reinforcement is definitely recommended: diagonal braces or metal brackets can be installed on the back to minimize wobbling.

Also, weight should be distributed carefully. Heavy items should ideally be placed on the lowest shelves and close to the wall side.

In practice, I have found it effective to secure the shelves to the side panels with 3-4 small screws if you are comfortable drilling. This significantly increases rigidity.

Additionally, self-adhesive rubber or felt pads at contact points can prevent vibrations from transferring.

However, I agree with GALEO4 that the shelf has its limitations. Nevertheless, there are many ways to mitigate the problem if approached skillfully.
