Hello everyone, I recently bought a Kallax shelf unit from IKEA, and it is now placed on a stone floor inside my apartment. My question is: Is this generally not an issue, or could it cause problems in the long term? I am particularly concerned about stability, possible scratches on the floor, and how the stone floor might affect the shelf in terms of moisture or temperature. Has anyone had experience with this or any tips on what to watch out for? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

The shelf should not be a problem on a stone floor as long as it stands level. A protective pad, such as felt gliders, will protect the floor from scratches.

When placing a Kallax shelving unit on a stone floor, two points should be considered: First, the flooring should be level and stable to prevent twisting or tipping. Second, it is advisable to use protective pads such as felt or rubber under the feet of the shelving unit to avoid scratches caused by movement. Moisture from the stone floor is usually not an issue indoors, provided there is no rising damp or the shelving unit does not come into direct contact with water. However, regular checks are recommended, especially in older buildings.

I completely understand your concern. In my apartment, I also had a Kallax shelf placed on a tiled floor, and at first, I was unsure about its stability. Using felt pads under the feet helped me avoid scratches, and the shelf stood very firmly. However, I had one issue when I accidentally spilled water on the floor – although the moisture didn’t soak into the wood, it’s really advisable to avoid such situations to prevent any potential damage.

Thanks for the tip, that sounds reasonable. I had thought about it, but wasn’t sure if the pads might affect the stability.

That’s somewhat reassuring. I don’t have any visible moisture, even though the apartment is older. I’ll definitely keep an eye on it.

Does anyone have experience with placing a shelf on stone flooring with a carpet underneath? Would that make sense or would it be inconvenient?

A rug under the Kallax shelf can help protect the stone floor and also reduce noise. However, the shelving unit may be less stable if the rug is not very firm or is too soft. Felt pads on the stone floor are usually the better option.
